Assistant Director of GrantsBackgroundHelping Up Mission, Inc. (HUM) is a faith-based, non-denominational, Christian organization offering permanent solutions to those experiencing homelessness, poverty, and addiction. HUM provides hope through programs designed to meet individual physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs. Services are provided to almost 500 men and up to 200 women and 50 children in need, without consideration of race, economic or religious status at its campus in East Baltimore. HUM provides competitive pay and benefits.Job DescriptionThe Grants Coordinator is a dynamic position at HUM, interacting daily with our Program staff directly serving our clients, as well as facilitating a strong working relationship with Finance and Human Resources departments. The Grants Coordinator is the key in-person representative of the grant program in the HUM Philanthropy team. The grants program integrates the best of strategic and targeted programs serving extremely vulnerable, but empowered, clients, with the best of strategic and targeted fundraising through grants with family foundations, corporate foundations, government entities (largely at the state level), churches, and community organizations.The Grants Coordinator, as a grants professional and the primary administrative support of the grant program, will perform a wide range of key functions necessary for the grant program, including conducting research, writing, and editing grant proposals, and stewardship/reporting on grant awards. The position requires well-developed written and verbal communication skills, managing multiple priorities, and planning and organizing to meet established deadlines. These goals will be sought while adhering to the core values of the mission. This position has significant opportunity to grow in an agile Philanthropy Team with in-person networking and donor cultivation. Some essential duties are shared with the Assistant Director of Grants and other staff in a supportive collaborative team environment.Primary DutiesThe essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:Administrative: 40% Level of Effort

Develops Agendas, takes Notes and Follows up Action Items for the grants program, largely with internal stakeholders.Formats grant applications and reports.Compiles supporting documentation for grant proposals/reports.Develops and maintains a proposal and reporting calendar (aka Grants Acquisition Tracker and Reporting Tracker).Manages stewardship calendar.Coordinates and follows up on the progress of submitted proposals.Develops and maintains master files on grants and documentation connected to programs funded by grants (in Microsoft 365 SharePoint).Maintains complete grant funder records in the donor database (Virtuous).

Grantor Research & Cultivation: 20% Level of Effort

Researches various types of grants available and the criteria to qualify for each, ranging from about $1,000 to $1 million multi-year grants to match HUM’s funding needs.Physically and virtually attends grant-maker and networking events.Hosts potential and current grantors for site visits, including walking tours at HUM.When fully trained, manages a small portfolio of grantors (estimated 5 – 10 grantors), serving as primary relationship manager for about 15% of the overall grants portfolio.

Proposal Writing and Report Development: 30% Level of Effort as part of team effort

Compiles necessary information for the application process through collaboration with other employees, clients, database research, and other fact-finding actions and meetings.Completes all documents, forms, or reports required by grantors.Interviews Clients and writes “Client Profiles”/Testimonies for grantor communications, including proposals and reports.

Participates in HUM’s therapeutic community, including two weekly Friday Phase-up Chapels celebrating clients’ achievements.Maintains confidentiality, particularly in reference to budgets, new projects, and staff information used for grant acquisition and management.Performs other related duties as assigned, including carefully selected team projects.Job RequirementsExhibit the Core Values of HUM (https://helpingupmission.org/about-us).College Degree, preferably bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications, Technical Writing, or similar. If a college degree has not been obtained, then 6 years of consistent work experience with administration, grants, or development experience may be substituted.Exceptional attention to detail, including excellent working knowledge of Conventional Standard English grammar, punctuation, and spelling.Independent and self-starter with hybrid supervision.Exceptional writing, editing, persuasion, and storytelling skills.Ability to repeat standard processes for efficiency, identify areas for improvement, and communicate needs with others.Familiarity with public speaking in small groups.Familiar with Microsoft 365 / Office Suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint (experience in Google environment suitable substitute).Confidence working collaboratively and independently in a deadline-driven environment.Strong communication skills to support collaboration with staff and volunteers.Excellent project management skills and ability to prioritize work and resources.Comfortable using Teams, Zoom, and other virtual meeting software for meeting with internal and external stakeholders frequently.Able and willing to become a member of the Grant Professionals Association (grantprofessionals.org) and active in the local chapter (Maryland Chapter), supported by HUM.Ability to sign annual Employee Conflict of Interest Statement.Criminal Background Check: Helping Up Mission is a “second chance” employer and “recovery friendly workplace” with over 70% of staff in recovery as graduates of our year-long Spiritual Recovery Program or people on their own recovery journey as a “Recovery Community Organization.” A suitable criminal background check must be completed and passed.Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)Experience in Grants Lifecycle: research, writing, management, and/or reporting.Master’s Degree, preferably in English, Journalism, Communications, Technical Writing, public health, public administration, or similar.Strong strategic research and analytical skills.Experience or familiarity with federal grants in any capacity (e.g. paid by a federal grant and required to report time, programmatic administrative support on a federally-funded organization, or even better, experience proposal or report writing).A Maryland, or adjacent state, Driver’s License and ability to minimally use personal vehicle for networking and grant-maker events.Experience with project management software and understanding of workflow management.Experience with Canva or other design software.Current or previous membership in the following professional associations: Grant Professionals Association, Association of Fundraising Professionals, Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement and/or National Grants Management Association, or similar professional association.Interest to work towards Grant Professional Certification (https://www.grantcredential.org/), once sufficient experience is obtained.Salary Range:
