Hoffmaster is a major converter of nonwovens, paperboard, and tissue in the Food Service and Consumer markets. The company produces single use napkins, guest towels, paper straws, as well as flexographic printed tissue, and flexographic printed paper plates. This person will create value by developing and implementing new products, materials, processes, or technology, and provide continued support for commercialized products. This role works in close collaboration with Business New Product Development, Product Marketing, Sales, Operations, Compliance/Regulatory, Legal and Engineering Teams to drive profitable growth for the company.Essential Job DutiesManage assigned strategic product development initiatives, ensuring project goals are delivered on time and within budget while optimizing organizational resources, including:

Align projects with manufacturing capabilities, industry innovations, and customer and consumer needs and requirements.Lead the justification of capital acquisition as required.Lead and execute technology research, prototype development, and product testing.Support NPD stage gate process including business case development and value proposition creation.Monitor and report out on project status to leadership team.

Lead teams to design, control, and analyze new products and changes to current products caused by materials, processes, and/or standard procedures; documenting, disseminating, and reporting data and recommendations to the organization.Provide technical leadership, direction and management on materials identification/analysis, optimization and problem solving for fibers, polymers, inks, and additives used in production with emphasis on tissue by monitoring the market (domestic and international) to identify new product technologies.Lead and manage commercialization, hand-offs to manufacturing, and troubleshooting within production plants.Lead and manage raw material initiatives to support cost of manufacturing objectives and production performance.Continuous learning and skill development of self and team to be recognized as effective leader and implementer of research principles, scientific analyses and project management.Partner with supplier’s technical resources in support of new products and innovation allowing HGI to operate like a vertically integrated company.Provide functional support in materials identification/analysis, optimization and problem solving for fibers, polymers, inks, and additives used in production with emphasis on tissue.Provide functional support in the initiation, design, development and implementation of new raw materials.Development of product design and specifications that support end user and consumer unmet needs in collaboration with product marketing, manufacturing, regulatory.Solve customer & consumer issues by using knowledge and resources from alternative categories internal and external to the company.Lead raw material initiatives to support cost of manufacturing objectives and production performance.Work closely with procurement to generate value propositions through materials testing.Monitor the market (domestic and international) to identify new product technologies to explore the potential to improve products/processes.Develop knowledge and skills to be recognized as an effective implementer of research principles, scientific analysis, and project management.Support scale-up trials and troubleshooting within production plants.Utilize the scientific method and data analysis with a creative approach to identify new opportunities and solve complex problems.Partner with operations and engineering teams to advance manufacturing capabilities and make impactful changes to how our products are made.Development of Intellectual Property, including existing patent investigations, and issuing patent applications.Required Skills/AbilitiesExperience working in a Research & Development environment with demonstrated results.Experience working with suppliers to manage the relationship and innovation execution to create value.Understanding of material properties and their impact on product performance.Experience with New Product Development/Stage Gate Process, Change Management, and Specification Ownership.Experience in working across the phases of the product development life cycle including to explore commercialization.Working knowledge of continuous improvement tools like DOE, pFEMA, and FEMA.Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Paper Science, or other Engineering degree preferred.5-10 Years of experience in nonwovens and/or tissue converting manufacturing.Ability to travel 25-30%, including international, when needed.At Hoffmaster, we believe every person deserves to feel successful.
