We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education, and outreach.The Biological and Environmental Engineering Department (BEE) is one of the largest of its kind in the country with a very diverse faculty, staff and student population. The department serves three integrated functions: teaching of undergraduate and graduate students; research on problems in biology and the environment; and public outreach to help society implement new knowledge.Within CALS and BEE resides the New York State Water Resources Institute (NYSWRI). NYSWRI has as its mission to improve the management of water resources in New York State and the nation.Position FunctionThe NYSWRI Spatial Analysis and Planning Extension Associate will provide outreach, research, and planning support in pursuit of various projects and programs across NYS. The applicant will be expected to develop and maintain a relationship with NYSWRI staff working both on and off-campus.Research/outreach topics include, but are not limited to:Diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) in access to water resourcesGeospatial analysis in support of watershed management objectivesEconometric modeling in support of water resource management decision makingBuilding community flood resilience, and the communication of flood risk in public spacesEducational efforts aimed at increasing water resource literacyThis position reports to the WRI Director, is located in Ithaca, NY on Cornell’s campus, and is a one-year termed appointment.Anticipated Division of TimeAssist other NYSWRI staff in needs assessment, content creation, and dissemination with respect to development of outreach related to municipal climate resilience.Facilitate needs assessments and technical assistance for communities pursuant to more equitable distribution of water infrastructure funding and financing in EPA Region 2.Apply design skills to visualize water resource management scenarios for public communication purposes.Work with vendors to turn designs into outreach products.Coordinate research projects and provide both qualitative and quantitative analysis support.RequirementsMaster’s degree in Regional Planning or related field with two years of relevant experience in environmental planning and green infrastructure.Experience in land-use regulations on community stormwater management and flooding mitigation strategies.Demonstrated knowledge of governance structures in NYS, particularly related to water resources management.Expertise in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for analyses and as a communication platform.To apply:Please apply via Academic Jobs Online (https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/28545).Qualified candidates should submit a short cover letter, curriculum vitae, contact information for three references, and a statement supporting diverse communities.Applications will be reviewed as received, continuing until a suitable applicant is identified.CALS hiring rate for this title is $71,000.
