FUNCTION : Responsible for the continuity of patient care throughout the facility. Disciplines and terminates nursing service employees when needed. Is responsible to make important immediate decisions for the good of the residents of the facility. Serves as the number two person in charge of the entire Nursing Department in the absence of the Director of Nursing.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervision of direct patient care.

Directs day shift and reports to evening shift issues that need to be followed up on.

Ensures that nursing policies and procedures are known to all nursing personnel.

Through supervisors and nurse managers, ensures that education, infection control issues and QA are compliant.

Makes frequent unit rounds to observe that proper infection control procedures are being used.

May monitor dining rooms to ensure they are properly managed.

Coordinates, monitors and assures proper follow up of all resident incident reports, completes investigation reports and follows through to the DOH if necessary.

Oversees clinical management of residents.

May assist with admissions from obtaining/transcribing admission orders to completing all the paperwork/EMR.

Supervision of Employees, follow up evaluations as directed from Director of Nursing.

Confers frequently with nurse managers regarding employee progress and job performance.

Ensures compliance with nursing staff dress code.

Responsible for overall functioning of Nurse Management Team.

Other duties:

Assists in educating nursing policies and procedures.

Investigates and reports to Director of Nursing any complaints regarding Nursing Services.

Completes Root Cause Analysis with the Director of Nursing.

Has an active role in ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements for surveys and investigations.

Acts as liaison between staff and Director of Nursing.

Communicates pertinent patient information to the MD/Nurse Practitioner regarding patient’s condition for nursing care.

May act as liaison between physician and family in absence of the Nurse Practitioner.

Conducts periodic staff meetings, keeps minutes and gives copy to DON.

Assures nursing involvement in the screening process of all prospective admissions to the facility.

Attends Medical Safety, Pharmacy, Infection Control, and QA meetings.

In the absence of the DON, Executive Director, or other designee, is responsible for proper functioning of the facility.

Keeps current in nursing trends, restorative and geriatric nursing by attending workshops, seminars and conferences.

Collects discontinued narcotics from units, stores and records them appropriately and fulfills the proper DOH paperwork to destroy them.

Attends and leads meetings as needed.

While performing duties of Certified Nurse Aide Training (CNAT) Program Coordinator, Program Instructor or Clinical in-service instructor, all other duties will be designated to other RNs as deemed by the DON.

REQUIREMENTS:

Graduate of an accredited nursing school, NYS RN license.

Five plus years progressive experience in nursing.

Demonstrate ability to teach adult learners as evidenced and documented by completion of a professionally recognized course in teaching adult learners or NYS department of education teacher certification.

Manages time effectively.

Able to lift 25 lbs.

Ability to walk 40% of the time.

May be slight exposure to hazardous materials.
