This hybrid position provides opportunity for a marketing-savvy individual or experienced fundraiser to make immediate contributions to a comprehensive gift planning program. Mount Holyoke’s strong history of legacy giving by alums and friends has helped to grow the College’s endowment and fuel its success. Planned gifts, including bequests and life-income gifts, play a prominent role in achieving the College’s annual and campaign fundraising goals.

The Assistant Director of Gift Planning manages the marketing, identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donors for life-income gifts, estate gifts, complex outright gifts and gifts-in-kind for Mount Holyoke College. This position requires limited travel in New England and New York for training and donor visits. The Assistant Director of Gift Planning reports to the Director of Gift Planning, is an integral part of the three-person Gift Planning Team and manages a portfolio of gift planning donors.

The Assistant Director of Gift Planning takes appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participates in the College’s efforts to create a respectful, inclusive and welcoming work environment. Principal Duties & Responsibilities:

Manage the cultivation and solicitation of potential gift planning donors in collaboration with the annual, leadership, special, and principal gifts staff.

Develop donor strategies involving gift planning tools; prepare and present proposals.

Learn and stay current on gift planning vehicles and strategies.

Limited travel regionally, independently or in collaboration with colleagues.

Develop, manage and oversee the implementation of a comprehensive gift planning marketing program including: direct mail, e-mail and College publications; oversee the maintenance of gift planning web-pages.

Manage and grow the Mary Lyon Society (MLS)–Mount Holyoke’s stewardship program for individuals who have included the College in their estate plans or created gifts that provide income–in collaboration with the donor relations, annual giving, leadership, special, and principal gifts staff: work with MLS volunteers to increase the number of bequests and assist with stewardship, cultivation and solicitation; oversee stewardship mailings to all MLS members and mailings from MLS volunteers to classes; plan and manage MLS stewardship event(s).

Draw up gift illustrations and assist with contract preparation for gifts that provide income (charitable gift annuities and charitable trusts); Mount Holyoke engages with College counsel as necessary.

Through in-depth conversations uncover new and gift planning opportunities.

Use the development database to record progress and results.

Develop and oversee other initiatives as opportunities occur.

Performs other duties/functions as requested.

Education Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree is required

Experience Qualifications

A minimum of 2-4 years’ experience in gift planning, or a combination of fundraising, marketing, gift planning, major gifts, law, finance or trust services.

Experience soliciting gifts

Must be able to deal with a diverse constituent base and handle confidential materials with discretion

Able to travel up to 20-25% of time within New England and New York.

Strong organizational, interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.

Proven ability to communicate effectively with individuals ranging widely in age, financial capability and financial literacy and adapt strategies to their needs.

Strong acuity with numbers.

Must possess a high level of integrity and credibility.

Domestic travel and occasional evening and weekend work required.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in nonprofit marketing.

Success in making major and gift planning solicitations

Training in aspects of charitable gift planning, including tax and inheritance law.

Supervision Exercised/Received

Reports to the Director of Gift Planning. The Assistant Director of Gift Planning does not supervise other personnel.
