General Role Description

Provide technical leadership for the research and development of tools and controls technologies with time horizons up to 2 years.

Role Accountabilities

Design, develop, and manage R&D project and investment activities to ensure integrity of design and accomplishment of design goals.

Research and assess the Company’s tools and controls products and systems performance and competitive position and recommend appropriate R&D projects and investments to senior management.

Monitor and investigate emerging tools and controls technology and recommend appropriate R&D projects and investments to senior management.

Develop and maintain relationships with university professors directing tools and controls technology research programs to identify and recommend new technologies with positive impact on the business.

Direct the work of engineers assigned to tools and controls technology projects for which the Chief Specialist is accountable.

Provide technical consulting, coaching and training of tools and controls technologies to company and subsidiary engineering team members, as directed by management, to transfer knowledge and ensure successful project execution.

Establish and maintain effective working relationship with parent company to secure approval for requested R&D projects and to obtain advance information about new tools and controls products.

Investigate tools and controls product failures and recommend corrective actions, as requested.

Present tools and controls technology to management, employees, clients and others at technical meetings, conferences and via technical articles in trade or professional society publications.

Prepare detailed user guides and related documentation for new tools or controls products or product features.

Travel to client or supplier site as needed to ensure development activity meets design goals.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering or equivalent via education and/or work experience.

15 years’ experience in tools and controls product and system development.

Proficiency in MS Office, software design and programming, Object Oriented modeling, software life cycle management, test design, user interaction design, CAD/CAE.

Demonstrated knowledge of local area network communication technology commonly used with motor drives and level 1 systems.

Demonstrated knowledge of engineering and product configuration tools commonly used with motor drives and level 1 systems.

Demonstrated knowledge of controls commonly used in motor drives and controls commonly used in level 1 industrial systems.

Demonstrated presentation skills.

Demonstrated successful working relationships with clients, suppliers, and other internal and external contacts.

Demonstrated successful and positive personal leadership, interpersonal, organizational, administrative, and communication skills.

Demonstrated continuous improvement in areas of responsibility.

Availability to travel domestically, approximately 15%, and internationally, approximately 10%, often with limited notice.

Preferred Qualifications

Master of science degree in electrical, systems, or computer engineering.

12 years’ experience in tools and controls product and system development.

Demonstrated successful working relationships with foreign parent or subsidiary companies.

Demonstrated knowledge and experience with TMEIC family of motor drive controls, level 1 controls, engineering tools, and product configuration tools.

Proficiency in MS Visual Studio-based software development, especially VB6 and C#; relational database design; Subversion; test automation development, especially HP QTP/UFT; AutoCAD Electrical or similar CAE use and automation.

Demonstrated experience with field and lab-based usability research methodologies and familiarity with Windows user experience guidelines.

Demonstrated knowledge of software development on non-PC form factors, such as tablet and mobile.

Demonstrated success leading teams, coaching, and directing the work of others.
