PRIMARY FUNCTION : This position is responsible for assisting the Executive Director of Student Support Services with utilizing the skills of leadership, supervision and administrative support and the available resources of the district and elsewhere to achieve and maintain standards of excellence established by the Board of Education. The Director of Counseling Services shall direct, implement, supervise, and evaluate comprehensive Elementary & Secondary School Counseling Programs across the district. The Director of Counseling Services will also supervise the district’s Wellness Center and the implementation of services. The Director of Counseling Services will also act as a liaison with various postsecondary institutions and community organizations.

SALARY SCHEDULE : Teach (Plus supplement)

WORK DAYS : 250

REQUIREMENTS:

Education Level: Master’s degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in school counseling.

Preferred:

Specialist degree or higher in content area from an accredited college or university

Experience, Skill, and Certification:

Hold a Georgia Professional Standards certificate in School Counseling

Education Leadership Certificate

Three or more years as a successful school lead counselor and/or district level coordinator.

Five or more years of successful school counseling experience

Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the components of a comprehensive developmental counseling program, counseling theory and practice, personality development, strategies for effective career, educational and college planning, child growth and development, learning assessment and remediation, research related to learning, and school and community resources available to assist students and parents.

Excellent and demonstrable oral and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and conflict resolution skills including dealing with people in stressful situations, making presentations to groups, writing clear and succinct letters and memos, and having effective relationships with students, staff, parents, and community members.

Demonstrated skills in keeping records, managing and understanding data, and preparing and presenting reports.

Knowledge of federal and state laws, district policies, and instructional best practices

Preferred:

Previous supervisory experience

Three (3) years experience in a leadership role

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Assists the Executive Director in the general administration of coordinated counseling activities (K-12).

Guides principals, counselors and counselor clerks in the implementation and administration of programs to ensure their effectiveness and provides feedback as appropriate.

Establish and promote high standards and expectations for all students and programmatic staff for academic performance and responsibility for behavior.

Organize, manage, supervise, and evaluate effective and clear programmatic procedures for the operation and functioning of Counseling Services in all elementary, middle, and high schools, consistent with the philosophy, mission, values and goals of the school and District.

Plan and carry out an effective program of system-wide school counseling in which counselors provide service and support to all students; including but not limited to general education, gifted, at risk, English Language Learners (ELL), and students with disabilities.

Collaborates with the Office of College and Career Readiness, Curriculum and Instruction, Health and Physical Education, and other departments on various local, state, and federal requirements as it relates to various programmatic requirements.

In collaboration with the Professional Learning Department, plan and supervise an orientation program for new school counselors.

Assume responsibility for his/her own professional development and best practices for supporting school counselors; for keeping current with the literature, new research findings and improved techniques in school counseling; and for attending appropriate professional conferences.

Establish effective liaison with the various offices and agencies within the community that may provide specialized or professional help to students and their parents as needed.

Define and interpret the professional functions of school counselors to administrators, teachers, students, parents, and the public.

Serve as a resource person in the assessment and diagnosis of learning styles and social and emotional needs of students, using various techniques.

When appropriate, work with schools to counsel individual students, including those requiring crisis intervention, to resolve educational, personal, emotional, and social needs and other areas of concern identified by the counselor, student, parents, teachers, and administrators.

Collaborate with Principals, School Administration, and community resources to coordinate and provide counseling and career education services for students who might be experiencing difficulty, including, though not limited to, academic achievement, health related concerns, and physical, emotional, and learning disabilities.

Notify immediately, appropriate personnel and agencies, and follow established procedures when there is evidence or suspicion of substance abuse, child abuse, child neglect, severe medical or social conditions, potential suicide or individuals appearing to be under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances, or anabolic steroids.

Provides supervision to the Wellness Center in the implementation of services to support students and staff throughout the district.

Ensures that all necessary reports, files, and forms are prepared in compliance with federal and state and district guidelines.

Provides professional development to schools and school counselors in support of program guidelines and plans.

Works with the Executive Director of Student Support Services to ensure compliance with student record maintenance system requirements.

Ensures that school counselors communicate effectively with families, school personnel and the community.

Collects and analyzes data and presents reports related to the effectiveness of instructional initiatives and evaluates program services.

Works with Student Information Systems, the Office of Instructional Excellence, and the Office of Schools to train staff and monitor the master scheduling process.

Collaborates with Student Information Systems, the Office of Instructional Excellence, and the Office of Schools to monitor and support the district’s Twilight program.

Performs other duties as necessary for the effectiveness of the organization and the safety of students.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Incumbents will receive an annual contract. The work calendar will be 250 days. Salary will be determined based on highest level of certification and allowable experience. Exempt Revised 09-24
