Mental Health Program Lead

Alternatives In Action High School (AIAHS) provides a holistic approach to education and youth development that includes enrichment groups, parent involvement programs, as well as community impact projects and educational support.

Our school focuses on supporting youth who have been unsuccessful in traditional learning environments and are looking for a small, relationship-based alternative. Serving approximately 150 youth, AIAHS supports youth to be college, career and community ready through project-based learning and youth-adult partnerships. We believe that all youth are wise, resourceful, and capable of making positive changes in their own lives and in the community.

POSITION OVERVIEWThe Mental Health Program Lead serves as the lead behavioral health provider serving youth and families and plays a critical role in developing, implementing, and overseeing the AIAHS mental health program. This position requires a compassionate, proactive individual dedicated to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for students, staff, and families and aligning with community standards and AIAHS's mission.

The Mental Health Program Lead provides school-based behavioral health services; strengthens and expands supports for youth and families; provides technical assistance, training, and coaching to strengthen the use of evidence-based practices, and provides lead direction and clinical field supervision to interns.

Working in close collaboration with the leadership, support staff, and community partners, the Mental Health Program Lead divides their time between capacity-building activities and direct services. The Mental Health Program Lead assumes responsibility for the overall management of the mental health programming at AIA, including formal supervisory responsibilities and oversight of interns, as well as intern recruitment, placement, quality assurance, chart audits, and training.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WOULD:Have experience with:

Developmental, academic, social/emotional and mental health needs of school-age youth.

Principles and practices of behavioral health supports in school settings.

Principles and practices of clinical supervision.

Theory and principles of mental health consultation, multidisciplinary teams, group and individual therapy/counseling, family support, trauma-informed practice, cultural responsiveness, and positive school/community environments.

Culturally competent, biopsychosocial assessments of youth, their families, and their social and school environments.

Basic methods of clinical intervention.

Critical aspects of conducting home visitations, such as home assessment, triage, and strategies for personal safety.

Conflict resolution, violence prevention, and substance abuse treatment and prevention.

Effective engagement of community agencies and resources and their role in supporting at-risk children and youth.

Applicable ethical guidelines and federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations.

Basic health insurance systems and operations related to the enrollment process.

Be fluent in Spanish and English.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Development and Management:

Assesses the social-emotional service needs and infrastructure of AIAHS and develop, implement, and periodically evaluate a capacity building, resource and service plan.

Design and implement comprehensive mental health programming and direct service.

Collaborate with school administration and staff to integrate mental health awareness and education into the school curriculum and culture.

Develop, improve, and support coordination systems with nearby agencies and schools to expand, enhance, and improve services.

Enhance school’s knowledge and implementation of effective behavioral supports and interventions, positive climate strategies, youth development, and family engagement.

Counseling and Support:

Serves as an internship field supervisor, as well as actively participating in intern recruitment, placement, training, and completion of all required paperwork.

Provides direct counseling services to students in need, including individual, group, and crisis intervention.

Develop referral systems and follow-up support for students requiring specialized mental health services.

Support teachers and staff in identifying and addressing students' mental health needs.

Coordinate and/or provide clinical case management, group, and individual counseling to students; and actively engages families, making home visits when appropriate.

Provide crisis assessment and intervention; develops treatment plans and implements interventions.

Recognizes a behavioral health crisis following a critical incident and consults with school leadership to organize a response including triage and follow-up with students, parents, and school staff.

Training and Professional Development:

Develops capacity-building materials and assistance related to school-based behavioral health including training, consultation and coaching to these partners.

Organizes and facilitates mental health workshops and trainings for students, staff, and parents, reflective of current best practices.

Coordination of Care, Collaboration and Community Outreach:

Leads or participates as a member of a variety of teams including the COST Team.

Engages with parents and the community to raise awareness and promote mental well-being.

Monitoring and Evaluation:

Prepares reports, case summaries, and correspondence as required; maintains clinical charts and work records consistent with program evaluation requirements.

Follows all legal mandates for reporting suspicion of physical and sexual abuse, danger to self or others, and other legally required exceptions to confidentiality.

Regularly assess the effectiveness of the mental health programs and initiatives.

Actively implements and participates in program evaluation by providing qualitative and quantitative data, reports, and recommendations in a thorough, accurate and timely manner.

MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION, CREDENTIALS, AND EXPERIENCEPossession of a Master's degree from an accredited school in social work, marriage and family therapy, psychology, or counseling.

Possession of a Marriage and Family Therapy, Clinical Social Work or Clinical Psychology license from the applicable licensing authority: California Board of Behavioral Sciences or California Board of Psychology is required. Must meet the state licensing authority criteria to clinically supervise interns.

The equivalent of three (3) years full-time postgraduate case management and/or counseling experience with youth (5-24 years of age) and families in a school or school-linked community setting that serves children, youth, and families and address educational outcomes.

Certification of Pupil Personnel Services Credential (PPSC) combined with two additional years of postgraduate counseling or case-management experience working in a school, school district, or community setting that serves children, youth, and families and are linked to educational outcomes setting.

Possession of a valid California Driver’s license is required.

Able to obtain clearance through Criminal History Background Check and Health Screening.

Compensation:

$86,000 - $105,000, depending on qualificationsSchedule:
