The Alaska Department of Natural Resources, Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys is recruiting a Geologist 4 position to work with the Energy Resources Section, based in either Fairbanks or Anchorage.
The successful applicant will be tasked with developing and managing a geothermal energy program that collects, analyzes and publishes relevant data. This multidisciplinary program aims to attract geothermal exploration investment and promote development success.
The Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys is a dynamic agency focusing on applied geoscience research to benefit Alaska and its residents. The Energy Resources Section generates new information about the geologic framework of frontier areas that may host undiscovered oil, gas, coal, and geothermal resources. We’ve recently extended our work to support lower carbon energy sources, including geologic CO2 sequestration and assessing critical minerals in carbon ores that are required in many clean energy products. Section members typically participate in two to six weeks of helicopter-based summer fieldwork, mostly in remote settings.
Mission and CultureThe DGGS mission is to determine the potential of Alaska lands for the production of metals, minerals, fuels, and geothermal resources, the locations and supplies of groundwater and construction material, and the potential geologic hazards to buildings, roads, bridges, and other installations and structures (AS 41.08.020). The Division views public geologic information as a key element in unlocking our natural resources, protecting communities, and helping grow Alaska's economy.
Core ResponsibilitiesThis position is a senior-level manager responsible for the scientific and operational leadership of the geothermal energy program. Important duties include:
Developing and implementing focused research projects.
Securing external project funding.
Supervising technical staff.
Establishing collaborations with other researchers.
Publishing technical reports and maps.
Leading outreach efforts to industry.

This experience is met by service as a Geologist 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.OROne year of advanced professional experience in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, geological engineering, engineering geology, or any of their subdivisions, including mining engineering. This experience is met by service as a Geologist 3 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.
ORA master's degree from an accredited college in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, geological engineering, engineering geology, or any of their subdivisions, including mining engineering.ANDOne year of journey professional experience in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, geological engineering, engineering geology, or any of their subdivisions, including mining engineering. This experience is met by service as a Geologist II with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.
ORA doctorate degree from an accredited college in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, geological engineering, engineering geology, or any of their subdivisions, including mining engineering.
Equivalent combinations of professional experience and graduate level education in the geoscience fields described above are acceptable and will be considered as follows: 24 graduate semester hours=one full year of graduate education=one full year of professional experience.
