Position Summary:

The Director of Nursing Services manages nursing services from the perspective of the facility as a whole. In this position, he/she has five primary domains of activity: leading, collaborating, integrating, facilitating, and evaluating, thereby contributing to the creation and maintenance of an environment that develops and supports professional nursing practices.

As the administrator of a significant component of the health care facility, the Director of Nursing Services exercises the authority inherent in the position to fulfill responsibilities to the profession, the health care consumer, and the facility. The incumbent provides leadership and vision for nursing’s philosophy, development, and advancement within the facility in particular and for society at large.

Qualifications:Must have a minimum of 10 years experience in a supervisory capacity in either a hospital, skilled nursing facility, or other related health care facility. Experience in rehabilitative and restorative nursing practices is desirable. Currently licensed as a registered nurse in Connecticut. Minimum of B.S. Degree in Nursing, Masters Preferred. Knowledge of MDS assessments and Care Planning.

Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday. Must be able to speak and write in the English language in an understandable manner. Must possess sight/hearing senses or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so the requirements of this position can be fully met. Must function independently, have personal integrity, have flexibility, and the ability to work effectively with other personnel. Must be able to push, pull, and move things. Must be able to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Participates in the administration of the health care facility as a full member of the executive team.

Participates in the strategic and long-range planning of the health care facility.

Provides leadership and participates in the determination of clinical and administrative nursing goals and directions.

As approved by the Administrator and the Regional Nursing Director, acquires and allocates human, material, and financial resources for specific functions and processes.

Monitors the EMR dashboard daily for alerts and other issues identified and addresses them accordingly.

Evaluates and revises the systems and processes of organized nursing services to enhance achievement of identified desired resident/patient/family-centered outcomes.

Facilitates the conduct, dissemination, and utilization of research in the areas of nursing, health, and management systems.

Serves as a professional role model and mentor to motivate, develop, recruit, and retain future nurse administrators.

Conducts unit rounds to ensure that nursing services are provided as intended.

Serves as a change agent, assisting all staff in understanding the importance, necessity, impact, and process of change.

Plans, develops, organizes, implements, evaluates, and directs the Nursing Services Department, its programs, and activities.

Develops and maintains a good working rapport with interdepartmental personnel, as well as other facility departments.

Develops and maintains Nursing Services objectives and standards.

Develops, implements, and coordinates departmental policies, procedures, and job descriptions.

Job Description:

Reviews department policies, procedures, manuals, job descriptions, etc., at least annually and participates in making recommended changes.

Interprets department policies and procedures to staff, residents/patients, visitors, etc., as necessary.

Ensures that residents’ rights are maintained.

Develops the Nursing Department's budget annually.

Develops and participates in programs designed for in-service education and orientation classes for new Nursing Department hires.

Selects and assists in hiring competent department personnel.

Maintains an excellent working relationship with the Medical Staff and other facility disciplines.

Creates and maintains an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest, and positive emphasis, as well as a calm environment throughout the Department.

Meets with departmental personnel on a regularly scheduled basis to solicit advice from departmental supervisors concerning the operation of the Department.

Maintains confidentiality of all pertinent resident/patient care information.

Inspects and/or delegates to the Associate and Assistants to inspect Nursing Service areas for compliance with current applicable regulations at least monthly.

Serves on various committees of the facility as required by existing regulations and as appointed.

Participates in resident/patient selection in relation to nursing needs and the capability of the Department to meet those needs.

Reviews complaints and grievances and makes necessary oral/written reports to the Administrator and Regional Nursing Director.

Attends and participates in workshops, seminars, etc., to keep abreast of current changes in the health care field.

Maintains an adequate liaison with families, residents, and patients.

Demonstrates awareness, respect, and concern for internal customers (coworkers) and external customers (i.e., patients, residents, families, physicians, referral sources).

Residents' Rights:

Maintains confidentiality of all resident care information.

Assures that the resident's rights to fair and equitable treatment, self-determination, individuality, privacy, property, and civil rights are followed.

Attendance:

Observes rules, policies, and regulations with regard to attendance, punctuality, appearance, and professional attitude as established by the facility.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to sit, stand, bend, lift, and move intermittently throughout the day.

Must be able to assist with the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.

Must pass medical and physical examination based on job qualifications, requirements, and duties/responsibilities.

Pay:

$130,000.00 - $150,000.00 per year
