EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Brightline Defense (Brightline) is seeking nominations and applications for the position of Deputy Director. Brightline’s programs focus on:

– Air quality monitoring in marginalized neighborhoods.

– Job training for frontline community members in the green economy.

– Youth development for environmental justice leaders.

The organization advocates for clean air, renewable energy infrastructure, and equitable workforce development, playing a key role in offshore wind development in California, local hiring, decarbonization, and strategic climate solutions.

The Deputy Director will serve as a member of the leadership team, reporting to the Executive Director, and will be an advocate for environmental justice in California, with expertise in program design, delivery, and understanding of climate and clean energy policy advocacy.

ABOUT BRIGHTLINE

Established in 2005 in San Francisco, Brightline is an environmental justice nonprofit that bridges policy advocacy and on-the-ground programs to promote sustainability and economic opportunity in frontline communities. The organization focuses on:

– Policy Development & Advocacy: Engaging frontline communities in advocating for environmental and workforce policies.

– On-the-Ground Partnerships: Empowering communities to advocate and prosper from sustainable development.

– Meaningful Connections: Bridging community members with policymakers to shape plans for economic growth and environmental protection.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The incoming Deputy Director will drive organizational development and management while overseeing successful implementation of programs and policies. Key responsibilities include:

Organizational Leadership – Strategy & Management (50%)

– Shape Brightline’s long-term vision through strategic planning and stakeholder participation.

– Develop annual workplans and evaluation systems for continual development and impact.

– Oversee program implementation and evaluation in California.

– Facilitate communication and collaboration within the leadership team.

– Develop equitable personnel policies and oversee HR processes.

– Serve as a secondary spokesperson and support Board engagement.

Program / Policy Advocacy Oversight (40%)

– Collaborate with the Executive Director on long-term vision and strategies.

– Supervise staff and manage programmatic budgets.

Financial and Administrative Support (10%)

– Ensure compliance with legal and lobbying requirements.

– Support fundraising and development of the annual budget.

– Assist with financial audits and provide staff support for Board committees.

QUALIFICATIONS OF THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate will be entrepreneurial, self-directed, and committed to environmental justice. Key qualifications include:

Core Qualifications

– Strong commitment to Brightline’s mission and passion for environmental justice advocacy.

– At least 10 years of relevant experience in program and policy design and management.

– Minimum of 4 years as an organizational leader and manager.

– Demonstrated understanding of the intersections of climate change, structural racism, and disenfranchisement.

– Outstanding communication, project management, and relationship-building skills.

– High emotional intelligence for consensus building and collaboration.

Preferred Qualifications

– Background in environmental or social justice, climate or clean energy.

– Familiarity with relevant state agencies (e.g., CPUC, CARB).

– JD or MS in public policy, public administration, or environmental science.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

Brightline offers competitive compensation, with a salary range of $145,000 – $160,000 based on experience. Benefits include:
