Job Description

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:The Part-Time Transcriptionist Apprentice completes all required training to learn how to transcribe verbal communication in real-time with specialized technology in a variety of settings (class, labs, meetings, formal events) for students, faculty, staff, administration, and visitors to LSC who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing in order to maintain institutional compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (Section 504) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Transcriptionist Apprentices support and promote all persons' right to communication equity in learning and workplace environments. Upon completion of all required training, the Transcriptionist Apprentice will be moved into a Part-time or Full-time Transcriptionist position.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:Successfully completes all required pre-screening and is accepted into the TypeWell training programCompletes all required components of TypeWell training program in no more than 4 monthsLearns how to listen to and rapidly understand spoken English and to restate rapidly in correctly formed English, the full meaning of what is heard in classes, meetings, and eventsLearns how to rapidly set up and break down transcription equipment and regularly relocate equipment to different locations as neededLearns about deafness, Deaf culture and the Deaf communityOnce TypeWell training is complete, provides 1,500 hours of direct transcribing service employment with LSC, or will be obligated to repay all expenses incurred by LSC during the training period.Ethically models positive and inclusive employee behaviorAttends and actively participates in ASR department meetings and activitiesContinuously reviews current processes and procedures, and shares challenges and improvement ideas with supervisor and teamResponsible for other reasonable, related duties as assignedKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:Ability and willingness to accept transcription assignments at a variety of times and locations within the LSC service area, as needed, which may include evenings and weekendsExcellent knowledge of English grammar, spelling and academic vocabularyExcellent typing skills (65 wpm net)Ability to effectively use captioning equipmentExcellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skillsStrong memory-recall ability and excellent reading skillsAbility to understand and adhere to LSC Policy on Students with Disability Rights, FERPA rules of the release of student information to faculty, parents, students, and other related federal, state, and local regulationsProficient knowledge of computer use in the workplace is required, including typing, maintaining an electronic work calendar in the specified program(s), utilizing internet search engines, as well as a variety of programs including word processing, spreadsheets, and databasesAbility to maintain a professional and friendly attitude and to quickly develop rapport with a wide variety of peopleStrong interpersonal and communication skills, including tact and diplomacyExcellent listening and customer service skillsStrong organizational and problem-solving skills with attention to detail and follow-throughAbility to maintain confidentiality and discretionPHYSICAL ABILITIES:Repetitive motion with finger and hands due to continuous typingSitting and typing for long periods of timeWORK SCHEDULE AND CONDITIONS:Equipment used includes, PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone and other general office equipment, as well as general captioning equipment/software (TypeWell and CART)Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the positionWork is generally performed in a climate-controlled office with minimal exposure to safety hazards. May include indoor and/or outdoor laboratory environments with exposure to inclement weather, dust, dirt, etc. May include work in close quarters (e.g., simulated or real truck-driving cab) as well as providing remote services.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:High school diploma or GEDAbility to type at least 65 wpm netReliable mode of transportation to travel between assignments within the LSC Service AreaPREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:At least one year of experience in higher educationAt least one year of work experience

Salary

Hourly Pay Rate is $13.52.00.
