This position provides advanced patient care within the Colorectal and General Surgery Department; you will work (4) 10-hour shifts primarily at our Smithfield outpatient setting; there are no nights, weekends or holidays required. What better way to balance work and family!

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant will provide the surgical patient and their family with continuity of care in the outpatient setting. The Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant will act as an integral part of the surgical service. The practitioner will also act as an educator and a liaison to other health care providers providing care across the care continuum.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Acts as an integral member of the surgical service for patients on the surgical service from inpatient services (both the ICU and the convalescent wards) to outpatient settings to include the following: conducting history and physical exams, ordering and interpreting lab tests, prescribing medications, developing and monitoring patient treatment plans, making appropriate referrals to other specialists, and prescribing and ordering appropriate treatment modalities.Performs minor procedures, including but not limited to: peripheral IV access, central venous access, PICC line placement, repair of lacerations, incision/drainage/washout/debridement of wounds, tube thoracostomy, tracheostomy changes, arterial catheter placement, removal of drains/sutures/staples, placement and removal of N-G tubes/N-D tubes/foley catheters, and assisting with surgery consistent with institutional processes.Collaborates with unit teachers and clinical nurse specialists to provide education to nurses in the patient care units, and serves as a preceptor for medical students, and other NP or PA students.Treats each person with respect and dignity.Participates in research studies and projects.Obtains Human Subjects Protection training.Obtains training in HIPAA compliance and all other applicable state and federal privacy laws.Establishes annual development goals in collaboration with physicians on the surgical service.Prepares health education materials for patients and their families.Attends continued education offerings and obtains all continuing education credits required to maintain licensure.Maintains ACLS certification.Participates in multidisciplinary meetings relating to surgery.QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's DegreeCurrent Rhode Island licensure as a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner (for NP) or Physician Assistant (PA)Current DEA licensureStrong interpersonal skills
