JOB OVERVIEWJob Description Summary:The Division for Student Affairs cultivates an inclusive community that supports connection, growth, and well-being for every student throughout their GW journey. Within the Division for Student Affairs, the Office of Military and Veteran Student Services (MVS) team works to provide military affiliated students with top quality customer service, timely and accurate benefit processing, and community-building programmatic activities. The Program Associate works in a collaborative team to process Department of Veteran Affairs and Department of Defense education benefits, manage GW’s Military Community Center, and engage and communicate with GW’s military-connected students.The Program Associate is the primary contact for prospective and transitioning military-connected students. The Associate represents the office to internal and external constituencies regarding GW’s military student services and resources. The Associate manages GW’s Military Community Center, plans and implements military student and alumni engagement and success activities, and advises GW’s Student Veterans of America (SVA) chapter. The Associate also serves as one of GW’s school certifying officials (SCOs) for the certification of Department of Veterans Affairs education benefits. The incumbent should demonstrate an attention to detail, event management and advising experience, excellent oral and written communication skills in a student-centered environment, and a commitment to diversity and providing access to higher education for military students.Reporting to the Director of Focused Student Communities, the incumbent is responsible for the following:Manages GW’s Military Community Center and is responsible for this facility’s events and activities.Advises GW’s Student Veterans of America (SVA) chapter, GW Veterans.Serves as the primary point of contact for veteran-serving organizations’ inquiries regarding activities, programs, and partnerships.Works collaboratively with key campus units/departments including: Counseling and Psychological Services, CARE, the Center for Career Services, Office of Student Success, and other departments to ensure student veteran success as one of GW’s School Certifying Officials leading certification of GW students with military experience. Performs certification duties in a timely fashion and as required by GW and the VA.Manages communication strategy related to all inquiries and corresponds with Veterans and Distance Education students, and tracks student contact to ensure that timely, regular consistent communication is maintained.Manages MVS’s bi-monthly enewsletter, “Dogtags”, to notify GW military students of important deadlines, events, activities, and job postings.Manages the MVS website.Makes recommendations to policy and procedure in response to evolving federal and local regulations regarding veteran benefits.Conducts outreach to other GW stakeholders, such as academic affairs, academic advising, and admissions offices, to share military student success policies, procedures, and tips.Ensures that all departments understand GI Bill functions and how to best apply scholarships.The incumbent may perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.The position is based at GW’s Foggy Bottom Campus in Washington, DC. The incumbent performs typical duties that are mostly administrative in nature and operates under general or limited supervision of the Director of Focused Student Communities.Minimum Qualifications:Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.
