Assistant Director of Engineering

American Cruise Lines, a leading cruise company, seeks a highly motivated and experienced Assistant Director of Engineering to oversee vessel refits, repairs, and shipyard projects for our expanding fleet of 19 cruise ships. This dynamic role requires a blend of technical expertise, strong leadership, and excellent communication skills. You will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing all aspects of off-season projects, in-season repairs, shipyard periods, and ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and to regulatory standards.

Responsibilities:

Collaborate with various departments (Engineering, Marine Operations, Hotel Operations, Purchasing, Culinary) to identify vessel needs, prioritize projects, and develop solutions for technical challenges.Develop comprehensive project plans, including timelines, budgets, and resource allocation, for off-season refits, in-season repairs, and shipyard periods.Secure project approvals from regulatory agencies (USCG) as required.Manage project budgets, track costs, and identify cost-saving opportunities through efficient procurement, negotiation with vendors and contractors, and crew utilization.Oversee all project logistics, including scheduling deliveries, arranging hotel accommodations for crew, and coordinating with shipyards and vendors.Provide technical information and guidance to shipboard ERAs (engine room attendants) and crew directly or through Port Engineers.Ensure adherence to all safety regulations while working on vessels and in shipyard environments.Manage the Salisbury, MD commissary and critical spare parts inventory.Contribute to the development and implementation of preventative maintenance programs to optimize vessel performance and minimize downtime.Respond promptly to critical repairs to ensure the fleet remains on schedule.Manage winter work lists for all engineering department repairs and projects, including large-scale projects like ship refits and dry dockings.Maintain strong relationships with USCG representatives and ensure vessel compliance with all USCG, USPH, FDA, EPA, and other federal regulations.Track and resolve USCG issued 835 deficiencies.Maintain and manage vendor relationships, including negotiating service contracts and ensuring vendor performance.Uphold EPA VGP compliance with grey/black water effluent quality reporting.Negotiate large purchases for ship engineering support, including critical spares.Control engineering department expenses through invoice auditing and approval of all engineering-related expenses.Qualifications:

Minimum of 10 years of experience in maritime project management, ship repair, or a related field.Proven experience with USCG regulations for passenger vessels (Sub-Chapter K) is strongly preferred.AutoCAD proficiency is strongly preferred.Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Business Management, or equivalent experience.Proven experience in managing complex projects in a dynamic environment.In-depth knowledge of inland and coastwise passenger vessel operations, maintenance, and repair requirements.Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.Strong leadership abilities to motivate and guide project teams.Demonstrated proficiency in project management software (e.g., Microsoft Project) and maritime management systems (e.g., HelmConnect).Ability to work independently and as part of a team.Excellent time management and organizational skills.Ability to travel extensively (50-60%) to various shipyards and vessels across the United States.Physical ability to work in shipyard environments, climb ladders/stairs, and navigate uneven surfaces.Compensation & Benefits:
