Work Schedule:

Full-time; Monday–Friday; day-shift work schedule. Weekend, evening, and holiday work sometimes required. Must be available and willing to work weekends and after hours as needed, often on short notice. Position includes rotating on-call responsibilities. Campus Safety operates 24/7/365.

General Description:

The Executive Director of Campus Safety and Emergency Management (Executive Director) will provide transformative and relationship-engaged leadership to the Department of Campus Safety. This role leads and contributes to the realization of the Campus Safety mission to promote and sustain a safe campus environment for all community members, maintain positive and trusting relationships with PLU community members, and initiate and sustain relationships with the surrounding Parkland community.

Reporting to the Associate Vice-President for Campus Life and serving on the Student Life divisional leadership team, the Executive Director will collaborate with and serve as a key advisor to the PLU community on campus safety issues, security operations and emergency management, and will work closely with colleagues, including students, across the university to refine and articulate Campus Safety’s vision and mission as a critical element of the PLU experience. The successful candidate will be well-versed in leading thoughtful and transparent conversations with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and external partners on the contemporary challenges facing university campuses.

The Executive Director is responsible for working in partnership with the entire campus community to cultivate and sustain an anti-racist, welcoming, safe, and inclusive living, learning, and working environment at PLU. They will be responsible for developing strategies and protocols to ensure that Campus Safety team members are a trusted and supportive resource for community members in need of services, with an emphasis on the well-being of and impact on all being served. This position is considered a mandatory reporter.

Grounded in a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and care, the Executive Director will be charged with positively impacting campus life through promoting and cultivating an environment safe for learning, living, and working, building community and relationships, promoting accountability, and reinforcing community standards and university policies/procedures.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Develop a vision and goal-setting framework to achieve clear objectives for PLU Campus Safety and Emergency Management that emphasize care for the community through inclusive customer service, education, public relations, risk management, and enhanced security policies and protocols.

Effectively communicate the PLU and Campus Safety mission and priorities with students, parents, faculty, staff, and the public, and offer outreach events as requested.

Steward the Campus Safety budget.

Oversee the university’s campus-wide emergency response, planning, and mitigation efforts.

Regularly assess progress on Campus Safety and Emergency Management priorities, contribute to the university and divisional strategic plan and priorities, and participate in on-going Student Life cycle for program review.

Provide guidance, required timely warning, and annual reporting related to the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act.

Lead Clery Act compliance at PLU, serving as both an individual contributor and a leader supporting business processes, training, and communications.

Provide oversight and leadership of continued improvement for PLU’s Continuity of Operations Planning.

Lead assessment, maintenance, and revision of PLU’s Emergency Management Plan for all hazards.

Recommend strategies for mitigation and identify ongoing hazards; to include, prioritization, risk analysis, projected costs, timelines, and potential grant funding sources.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Commitment to PLU’s mission and the mission of PLU Campus Safety.

Proven executive administrative experience and supervisory skills.

Ability to work in partnership with educators and students from across the university and with neighbors in the surrounding community.

Strength in designing safety and security practices that are collaborative and inclusive of various intersecting identities.

Orientation as an educator and possess a commitment to, and knowledge of, effective teaching and training strategies.

Knowledge of current trends in higher education, social justice and equity education, models for community caretaking, and student success and outcomes.

Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, and conflict-resolution skills, as applied in an educational environment.

Prior experience with data collection, analysis, and reporting.

Familiarity with laws and compliance requirements that have direct or indirect relationship to Campus Safety operations.

High level of confidence and adaptability with technology.

Effective budget-management and data-analysis skills.

Excellence in time management, attention to detail, and organization.

Ability to be a proactive self-starter while managing and performing effectively within a highly fast-paced and unpredictable environment.

Evidence of NIMS preparedness.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree.

3 years job-related experience.

Demonstrated increasing levels of leadership and supervision.

Valid Driver’s license (Must have had a valid driver’s license for at least 2 years).

First aid/ CPR / AED certification required and provided upon employment.

Finalist applicants must satisfactorily complete pre-employment background checks including driving abstract check and PLU’s Driver’s Certification Training.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s Degree or other advanced degree.

Leadership experience in a college or university setting.

Experience working with campus safety services or with community-engaged safety models.

Work Conditions:

Work is normally interior/office work, but some field work is necessary.

Exposure to all kinds of weather conditions.

Occasional exposure to physical risk.
