Position Summary

The Assistant Director, Career Development is an integral member of the Center for Career Engagement (CCE) team and serves as a coach for students and recent alumni within the Arts, Design & Media Career Community. Specifically, this candidate will work closely with architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design students at the undergraduate and graduate level. Develops and delivers focused programming in close collaboration with employer engagement and academic partnerships within the CCE, and within the Sam Fox School to work alongside and empower students to help establish and manage their career paths.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

Serves as a career advisor to architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design undergraduate and graduate degree individuals.

Builds and develops relationships with students to (a) understand their career needs and (b) steward them through the career preparation process.

Determines additional resources required for each student and guides them to other resources, within assigned career center and beyond, to prepare them for technical aspects of interviews (industry directors, specialist coaches, platform leads, etc.).

Identifies individual needs, goals, and challenges for career path.

Reviews each student's skills and abilities, determines and develops tailored action plans to help students on their career journey (identifying interests, gaining skills capabilities, networking, etc.).

Analyzes student self-assessments and translates them into actionable insight and next steps.

Determines other skills required to ensure students are ready and delivers actionable feedback on students' career and preparation process.

Provides recommendations regarding students' readiness for interviews with employers.

Facilitates career development content in Management Communications and Practice courses, including, but not limited to, activity design, assignment evaluation and partnering with faculty and academic advisors to develop and deliver content.

Partners with academic advisors on personal or career issues that may affect assigned students' academic journey.

Informs industry directors/specialized coaches of unique or technical needs and challenges of assigned students advising and leadership initiatives.

General academic, program, and university support including, but not limited to, implementing program initiatives, presentations and other university-wide initiatives.

Leadership and supervision of generalist advisors and coordination with assigned program offices.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

A graduate degree may be required depending upon school and/or student's degree.

Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as necessary.

Willingness to travel up to 15% of time both domestically and internationally.

Experience working with international students and/or under-resourced students is desirable.

Six years of experience in one or more of the following areas: Career Development/Planning/Advising, Career Counseling, Training and Development, or Architecture.

Demonstrated stellar interpersonal skills needed, as well as strong skills in relationship-building, advising, organization, leadership, and creative thinking.

Demonstrated client/peer relationship management skills and orientation.

Ability to problem solve and work with little supervision while depending on collaboration across a matrixed organization to achieve success; strong initiative and follow-through.

Demonstrated ability to build highly effective curricula and programming.

Outstanding communication skills, both one-on-one and in small and large groups.

Salary Range:

$53,100.00 - $90,600.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
