Job Summary

This position is responsible for a variety of tasks in the interpretation and enforcement of adopted codes and related rules and regulations. Employees in this job class inspect buildings during new construction, renovation, and prior to condemnation. Code Enforcement Officers keep and maintain various records and files of all specifications, plans, zoning appeals, complaints, sub-divisions, approvals and stop work orders.Essential Functions

Patrols and inspects the City to monitor for violations of local code and ordinances related to property maintenance, building and zoning codes.Responds to requests for information and complaints of potential code violations relating to signage, building occupancy, nuisance, housing conditions, construction, land use, zoning, animals, noise, dumping, clearing, landscaping and/or similar property maintenance issues or other code related matters.Meets with owners, tenants, contractors, developers, businesses, etc. to review, interpret, and explain code requirements, violations, and potential violations to secure code compliance.Conducts field investigations of potential violations. Compares facts or code requirements, makes findings, and issues warnings, correction notices, or citations to ensure compliance and safety.Maintains thorough and accurate documentation related to enforcement activities.Reviews cases for and attends evening Administrative Adjudication as requested. Prepares detailed reports of activities, investigations, and case reports for court action and testifies in court as directed.Assists the Director of Planning, Building & Sustainability in obtaining, enhancing, preparing, or presenting exhibits or other evidence in court as required, and testifies as needed.Coordinates efforts with the Police and Fire departments.Drafts and distributes correspondence, memorandum, notices, flyers, brochures, media releases, and reports related to code enforcement issues and actions.Engages in activities designed to ensure professional development, awareness of developments in the field, and knowledge of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies and/or guidelines.Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.Two years of customer service experience related to inspection, law enforcement, building inspections, land use, public administration, or related field.Working knowledge of code enforcement principles, practices, and methods and applicable public safety codes, laws, standards, and regulations as applicable to a municipal setting.Strong interpersonal communication skills for interaction with co-workers and the public.International Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector Certification or ability to obtain within one year.Alabama Peace Officers Standards & Training Commission (APOST) certified.Able to work under varying physical and environmental conditions and lift up to 50 pounds.Valid driver's license.On-call in the event of a natural disaster and/or in situations deemed necessary by the Director.

Work Environment:

Work is conducted both indoors in office setting as well as regular field visits to external places of business, residence, or construction worksites.

Physical Demands:

Job involves moderate physical exertion required for occasional prolonged periods of lifting, carrying, balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, or running. Work may involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
