The Director of Labor Relations directly reports to the Vice President of Human Resources. The Director of Labor Relations position is responsible for and oversees all labor relations activity for Henry Ford Health. The Director develops, implements and leads a comprehensive and effective labor strategy, including the development of a system-wide union organizing campaign and response, as well as the negotiation, interpretation, and administration of collective bargaining agreements.Additionally, the Director of Labor Relations provides direct guidance and support to operational management in preparation for strikes and picketing or other job actions by unions. The Director is responsible for the development of union and labor relations related training in compliance with labor law. The Director also advises and collaborates with senior leadership and members of the Human Resources team on applicable labor law, the current labor environment, and legislative trends. The Director of Labor Relations represents Henry Ford Health in grievances, mediation and arbitration.PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Develops, implements and leads the labor strategy for Henry Ford Health (including all hospital sites, and off-site areas as applicable).Contract negotiations to include drafting of proposal, legal arguments, creation of exhibits and talking points, mediation and lead negotiator.Arbitration advocate for contract interpretation and disciplinary grievances.Unfair Labor Practice charge hearings, testimony, examination and cross examination of witness.Creation and submission of legal briefs to support hearing arguments/position.Serves as the primary point of contact for all union-related matters, including collective bargaining, organizing campaigns, petitions, mediation, arbitration, and administrative charges.Partners with internal and external legal counsel on union related matters.Develops and leads organizational response to union organizing campaigns and election petitions.Develops and provides training to Human Resources and operational leadership on union avoidance and employee relations strategies.Provides direction to Human Resources and operating leadership on policy and CBA interpretation.Oversees the grievance process to ensure contractual rights are upheld.Prepares cases for and represents HFH at arbitrations, administrative hearings, and trials.Ensure compliance with federal and state laws regarding employment and labor-related matters.Researches and communicates proactively on the latest environmental and legislative trends and decisions to forecast impact and develop and lead organizational response.Works closely with Human Resources and others to develop and maintain partnerships for effective administration of labor relations.Supervision of labor relations staff members.REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:If degree prepared, minimum of 7-10 years of labor relations experience and leadership of represented employees, required.At least two (2) years of direct experience in a supervisory or managerial capacity, required.Ability to travel locally between HFH sites as required.Knowledge of labor relations practices and contract administration.Demonstrated organizational project management skills with meticulous attention to detail.Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).Excellent communication skills, (e.g., verbal, written, listening) with the ability to persuasively communicate ideas.Tactful negotiation skills with ability to build trust with internal customers and manage confidential data with discretion.Prior experience leading labor relations within a health system is strongly preferred.Must meet or exceed core customer service responsibilities, standards and behaviors as outlined in the Henry Ford Health Customer Service Policy.REQUIRED EDUCATION:Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Human Resources, Business Administration or another relevant field, required.Equivalent combination of education and minimum of 15 consecutive years of direct and independent lead labor negotiation and administration experience will be considered in lieu of degree.Master's Degree preferred.Additional Information:Organization: Corporate ServicesDepartment: HFH HR OperationsHenry Ford Health Location: Henry Ford Hospital - Detroit Main CampusShift: Day JobUnion Code: Not ApplicableThis posting represents the major duties, responsibilities, and authorities of this job, and is not intended to be a complete list of all tasks and functions.
