Rail Yard / Operator

to join our team in Emporia, Virginia.This position will be to control and coordinate the shuttle wagon movements while switching railcars in the yard to facilitate the unloading and loading of railcars in a safe and efficient manner.

Job Overview:Operation of shuttle wagon locomotive.Able to follow and update a track listManipulate switches for correct track alignmentMechanically inclined and can make small equipment adjustments.Ensure proper functioning of a railcar facility, operating switching vehicles between tracks as needed.Read switching orders from a designated person.Supervise and coordinate train crew activities.Get instructions from a manager about which cars need switching.Communicate with the crew via radio to give or receive switching information.Give instructions for operating track switches and coupling/uncoupling cars.Help throw switches or assist with switching tasks as needed.Apply and release handbrakes using the brake wheel or lever.Watch the track for obstacles.Keep records of car numbers, origins, destinations, and cargo.Creating daily reports for each railcar whose activities you are logging.Connect air hoses when making up trains.Perform other tasks as needed.

Follow written and spoken instructions to complete tasks on time.Communicate in English and understand basic math.Learn from instructions, observations, and mistakes, and use good judgment.Prior heavy equipment experience required.Strong Mechanical backgroundAbility to constantly use bending, squatting, twisting, and walking motions throughout the entire work shiftMust be able to work independentlyAbility to constantly work in an outdoor environment, exposed to all weather elements, including extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust and noisy conditionsPhysical ability to meet the demands of the job, including heavy lifting and extensive walking.Ability to occasionally climb, using various types of laddersValid Driver's LicenseAbility to pass background check and pre-employment drug screen.Dependable and willing to work flexible hours.Good problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.Strong commitment to workplace safety.Show up regularly and on time.Preferred ExperienceClass 1 or Short line rail experienceExperience loading or unloading railcarsExperience with railcar or track maintenanceAbility to conduct or operate a locomotiveCompensation and Benefits:Competitive compensationHealth, dental, vision, life, and disability insurances offeredPaid time off and holiday pay available after training periodRetirement savings plan offeredSchedule is Monday-Friday (occasional weekend and holiday work)
