Dr. Henri Drake in the Department of Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine is seeking a motivated postdoctoral scholar to use innovative methods to investigate the occurrence of compound ocean extreme events and their impacts on marine ecosystems in the Northwest Atlantic. The postdoc will collaborate closely with another UCI postdoc and co-PI Dr. Gael Forget at MIT.The selected candidate will be expected to analyze the spatiotemporal evolution of extreme ocean events in a numerical ocean model and observations; identify the physical and biogeochemical drivers of these events using tracer budgets; and quantify impacts of these extreme events on marine ecosystems. They will communicate their results through peer reviewed publications, conference presentations, participation in NOAA's Marine Ecosystems Taskforce, and open-source code development. They will also be expected to contribute to a supportive and vibrant group culture and mentor undergraduate and doctoral students in the group.Position perks:This is a two-year position that is renewable, pending good progress and available funding. The salary will range from 66,737 to 80,034 USD per year, scaling with experience as detailed here and includes generous benefits.Perks of the ESS department and UCI Campus:The Ocean and Climate Dynamics group led by Dr. Henri Drake uses theory and numerical simulation to study multi-scale dynamical ocean processes that are particularly relevant to Earth System dynamics and anthropogenic change. The group benefits from close collaborations with both ocean model developers and sea-going oceanographers. The Earth System Science Department at UC Irvine is highly interdisciplinary. It includes 28 faculty with broad expertise, all devoted to the study of the Earth as a coupled system. UC Irvine is located in Orange County, about halfway between the diverse metropolitan areas of Los Angeles and San Diego.
