USDA Agricultural Research Service is currently recruiting for a

Soil Scientist

at Midwest Area: USDA ARS in Green, KY.Duties:Determines the proper experimental approach in setting up research experiments to solve complex agronomical and environmental responses of plants to multiple climatic and soil factors.Maintains, modifies, develops, and adapts as necessary scientific instrumentation and growth systems to measure, control, and conduct experiments at the laboratory’s soil-plant atmosphere research facility.Conducts experiments in which various environmental and soil factors are manipulated and monitored, including greenhouse gases (GHGs) such as CO2, CH4, and N2O concentrations, soil and air temperature, and soil water contents.Conducts measurements of plants and soils, harvest plant biomass and grain yield, performs soil and whole plant gas exchange measurements using unique techniques, modifies methods, and instrumentation to solve problems.Maintains data, performs appropriate calculations and analyses, and evaluates the adequacy of results for meeting objectives.Complies with laboratory practice and experimental protocols to ensure plants are grown, fertilized, watered, inspected regularly for disease and insects, and treated appropriately, adhering to safety and health guidelines.Experience:Degree:

Soil science or a closely related discipline that included 30 semester hours or equivalent in biological, physical, or earth science, with a minimum of 15 semester hours in such subjects as soil genesis, pedology, soil chemistry, soil physics, and soil fertility.ORExperience:

Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-11 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-09 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience leading an experiment or research project related to soil and water science; analyzing and interpreting research data or results; and assisting with the evaluation, interpretation, documentation, and publishing of findings.ORCombination of education and experience:

Courses equivalent to a major in soil science or a related discipline that included at least 30 semester hours in the biological, physical, or earth sciences. At least 15 of these semester hours must have been in the areas specified above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
