Overview

The Interlibrary Loan (ILL) unit is a quality-controlled, production environment within the Circulation Services Department. The purpose of interlibrary loan is to obtain, upon request of a library user, material not available in the user’s local library. The Seattle Public Library participates in a worldwide network of libraries that share resources through the interlibrary loan service. The ILL unit employs this network to acquire materials for SPL patrons and to lend SPL materials to other library systems. The Library Technician 3 reports to the Circulation Services Manager. The work of this position is directed by the ILL Coordinating Library Technician and is closely coordinated with the ILL Library Technician 2. The Library Technician 3 has an advanced technical role that requires a comprehension of all procedures relevant to the purpose of the ILL unit, and familiarity with related Library policies and procedures, including interlibrary lending and borrowing, circulation services, bibliographic and catalog records, mail and courier services, materials handling and distribution, data collection and entry, and processing of library materials.

The Library Technician 3 secures materials from the SPL collections for loan to other libraries; communicates with SPL staff, patrons, and other organizations about request status, policies, and procedures; verifies interlibrary loan requests; places holds; files, scans, and electronically delivers documents; and provides photocopies for borrowing libraries. The Library Technician 3 also locates and obtains material in other libraries for SPL patrons, oversees its use by our patrons, and provides for its safe return to the owning library system.

Additionally, the Library Technician 3 compares multiple catalogs and bibliographic databases to accurately locate libraries holding particular materials. The Library Technician 3 applies overlapping requirements of codes (e.g. copyright), protocols and policies to achieve SPL service goals and makes sound independent judgments with a minimum of direct supervision.

The Library Technician 3 must be able to work independently and effectively in a high production environment while maintaining close attention to detail and the highest standards of accuracy. The Library Technician 3 must also have the ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively with coworkers in and outside the unit, and to represent The Seattle Public Library in a professional, courteous, and helpful manner in transactions with other libraries.
