Do you have a passion for history and want to play a vital role in preserving cultural heritage? As the Two-Year Project Archivist at the Archives of Appalachia, you will lead an exciting initiative to process and uncover a treasure trove of primary sources.Through an IMLS grant, you will oversee the arrangement, description, housing, and digitization per contemporary professional standards, vocabularies, and practices as well as local processing guidelines; rehousing the collection and addressing any preservation concerns as needed; creating a finding aid for the collection using a hosted version of ArchivesSpace; performing quality control reviews to ensure accuracy and completeness of work; and contributing to project documentation. This eclectic collection contains a rich variety of media – from 1000+ oral histories to 1500 rare photographs to 100 linear feet of documents.You will employ best practices to ensure these historic materials are professionally organized and accessible for researchers. Your finding aid creations will virtually expand access for all. You’ll also supervise student workers and contribute to project reports, allowing others to learn from your work.As a key member of the Archives team, you’ll play an integral role in showcasing Appalachian voices and stories from the past. Employees must be able to perform the position’s essential functions satisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodations.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Knowledge of standards and best practices for arranging and describing manuscript, A/V, and photographic materials, as demonstrated through relevant experience and/or coursework.Knowledge of Microsoft Office/365 applications (Outlook, Word, Excel), the Adobe Creative Suite (Acrobat, Photoshop), and archival collections management software programs such as ArchivesSpace.Ability to learn new technologies and instruct others in their uses.Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.Ability to work independently, as well as in a team environment.Ability to balance and complete multiple concurrent projects, set priorities, and maintain a schedule in order to ensure timely completion of goals and objectives.Ability to process collections in a timely manner.Ability to supervise the work of others.Ability to move archival collections (up to 40 pounds).Ability to tolerate dust, possible exposure to mold, and occasional exposure to fumes.Required Qualifications:A Master’s degree in a relevant discipline received by the time of hire.ORA Bachelor’s degree plusAt least three years of work experience in an academic archive.Preferred Qualifications:Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program for library and information sciences received by the time of hire;One year of experience processing archival collections with multiple formats, including audio, moving images, artifacts, manuscripts, and photographs.Knowledge of Appalachian culture and history.Certification through the Academy of Certified Archivists.Salary:
