The Department of Surgical Sciences at The University of Wisconsin, School of Veterinary Medicine is excited to announce an open position for a full-time Assistant, Associate or Full Professor in the Tenure, Clinical, or Teaching Track, depending on qualifications, experience, and academic focus. The successful candidate will join the Small Animal Surgery Section, which is comprised 6 full-time ACVS Diplomates with a range of experience and academic interests, 6 residents/interns, and a dynamic group of certified veterinary technicians. The UW Veterinary Care teaching hospital is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment including arthroscopy, 3T MRI, CT, and ultrasound. The small animal orthopedic and soft tissue surgery services are about to move into a new state-of-the-art hospital facility, that is fully supported by equipment for diagnostic imaging, arthroscopy, 3D printing, gait analysis, and orthopedic scientific research.Responsibilities will include providing clinical service in the teaching hospital, participation in clinical and didactic teaching of veterinary students, residents and interns, and pursuit of clinical or basic science research. Clinical duties include leading resident-based or student-based rounds that involve approximately 3 hours per week. Student case-based rounds are conducted by faculty in conjunction with residents when the faculty are assigned to clinic duties. Assignments of academic clinical practice, teaching, and expectations for research are dependent on the track in which the candidate is appointed and through negotiation with the Department Chair. Weeks of clinical duty could range from 25% to 75%.Responsible for the supervision of the clinical training of students. This function is used to describe instructional academic staff positions in the health sciences and other academic disciplines with clinical practices. Clinical titles must have the approval of an academic department. Modified professorial functions have three prefixes or levels: Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor. The specific definition of each level for professorial academic staff titles is left to the purview of each unit in which the title is employed. However, differences between successively higher title levels must reflect demonstrable differences in experience and knowledge gained, applied to the specific duties of the function.SVM has completed a beautiful new small animal hospital. In addition, upgrades are being made to the current large animal hospital include an Imaging Center with large animal-capable 3T MRI, 16-slice CT, and future PET-CT.For more information about this position, please contact Dr. Peter Muir at peter.muir@wisc.eduDVM or equivalent required. An individual with American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) board certification or who is ACVS board eligible with advanced training in orthopedic surgery is preferred. ECVS residency trained individuals will be considered. Must be licensed to practice Veterinary Medicine in the State of Wisconsin.This position has a strong emphasis on patient management, but also teaching and clinical research depending on the academic track in which the candidate is appointed. Experience working with, teaching, and/or mentoring diverse groups of interns, residents, and students is a plus.
