SUMMARY:

The College of Humanities, Social Sciences & Arts (CHSSA) is seeking an innovative and forward-thinking individual to lead and advance the departments of Literature & Languages, Liberal Studies, History, Political Science, Sociology and Criminal Justice, Art, and Theatre, and the School of Music. The departments house numerous undergraduate and graduate programs that offer a range of credentials from minors and certificates to bachelors, masters, and one doctoral degree (English) in person and online across multiple campuses. This is a full-time, 12-month administrative position with a tenured appointment at the Associate or Full Professor rank. The successful candidate is responsible for developing a productive and collaborative atmosphere; mentoring faculty; developing an effective shared governance system; working effectively with the College dean and senior administration; establishing industry partnerships; developing a strategic plan to facilitate enrollment growth; and building excellence in instruction, curriculum, and scheduling in collaboration with department faculty.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

General. Works collaboratively with Dean, senior administration, and faculty to build a positive culture and effective structures, policies, and channels of communication; works collaboratively with Dean toward effective leadership and management of programs within and beyond the College, as assigned.

Contribute to leadership of College initiatives and programs at Commerce and other University campuses and platforms, with special emphasis on the 8750 campus in Dallas.

Assists in optimizing work processes, strategic budgeting, aligning resources with strategic objectives, reviewing current processes and implementing division processes.

Serves as the primary liaison for the departments with the dean, the graduate school, the registrar, and institutional effectiveness research office and other campus offices as needed.

Serves on selected departmental, College, and University committees.

Curriculum & Instruction. Maintains primary responsibility in advising the Dean on all matters related to scheduling and staffing curriculum delivery; ensures that departmental course offerings optimize resources and are scheduled in a timely manner to ensure the smooth flow of student progress toward graduation.

Assists in the development and implementation of departmental plans for curriculum review, revision, and development.

Maintains primary responsibility in ensuring the excellence of curriculum delivery; utilizes student assessment of instruction and input from faculty, program graduates, and external stakeholders/employers to identify and recommend areas of greater demand and to seek out new areas of strength.

Oversees, in conjunction with the Dean, program faculty, and departmental staff, an effective and continuous student academic advising program for each academic program of study in the College.

Monitors graduation rates, and ensures compliance with requirements of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and accrediting organizations.

Monitors departmental scholarship committees and ensures they are fully awarded and made in a timely fashion.

Facilitates the development of new undergraduate and/or graduate courses as needed.

Facilitates the development of new programs, certificates, internships, and microcredentials as needed.

Personnel Management. Contribute to strong sense of identity and belonging both to TAMUC and CHSSA through a spirit of mentoring.

Participates in personnel, tenure, and promotion matters within the College, as appropriate and assigned.

Promotes and mentors the professional development of faculty within the departments, including but not limited to supporting attendance at professional conferences, grant writing, academic and research publications, mentoring, and community engagement.

Assists the Dean in assessing departmental performance and determining critical requirements for program practices and documentation with a view to optimizing alignment with strategic initiatives.

Assists in performing annual evaluations of faculty and staff.

Recruitment and Retention. Assists the Dean in recruitment and retention of students and faculty.

Workforce Development and Community Engagement. Supports the Dean in the establishment of a network of partnerships with the regional industry and community.

Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education:

Earned doctorate in a discipline represented in CHSSA or a closely related field from an accredited institution.

Experience / Knowledge / Skills:

Academic background commensurate with the rank of associate professor or higher. Proven experience record as a Department Head, Assistant Dean, or Associate Dean. Higher education teaching experience with evidence of teaching excellence. Academic background commensurate with the rank of associate or full professor. Proven records of success in the following areas:

Department/College/University leadership experience

Extensive service to College/University/and Community

Program, faculty, and department assessment, and personnel management (including recruiting and retention of quality full- and part-time faculty)

Commitment to shared governance and quality programs

Evidence of effective interaction and communication with all stakeholders, which includes students, faculty, administration, alumni, community, and industry as well as active participation in professional organizations.

Ability and Willingness to:

multitask and work cooperatively with all faculty, staff, and students; work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends as needed; travel and represent the College/University as necessary.

Licensing/Professional Certifications:

Valid Driver's license.

PREFERRED EDUCATION / SKILLS/ EXPERIENCE:

US Citizenship. Experience with successful accreditation. Active regional or national profile in the applicant's professional or scholarly field.
