The Development & Community Engagement Director (DCED) will be a motivated, creative, and experienced mission-driven professional interested in refining, growing, and leading our fundraising and marketing efforts. We are committed to empowering students and alumni through transformative educational programs. You will join a small, mighty, creative, and collaborative team committed to UA Foundation’s mission to facilitate educational programs and opportunities that support college readiness, college completion, and career success for University Academy students and alumni.

POSITION: Development & Community Engagement Director
The Development & Community Engagement Director (DCED) works with the Executive Director on the development and facilitation of the annual fundraising plan, leads the planning and implementation of our annual gala, manages donor relations, researches and writes grants, and leads all marketing efforts including website management and posting on social media accounts. The DCED will assist with alumni events as well as participate in initiating and managing relationships with both nonprofit and for-profit partners as it relates to college persistence and career opportunities for UA alums.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
University Academy Foundation Annual Gala - held each year in April
Oversee all elements of Gala planning and execution
Serve as primary liaison to Gala Event and Honorary Chairs, Gala planning team, volunteers, local event partners/vendors as well as applicable school staff
Solicit sponsorships in collaboration with event chairs
Other Community Events
Oversee all elements of planning and execution of UAF donor and community events
Attend networking and professional development events as a representative of UAF
Schedule and manage tours of UA for donors and prospects
Work with the UA Alumni Council and applicable to UAF staff to plan alumni events, including the Alumni Awards Banquet in December
Fundraising
Develop appropriate strategies for donor cultivation, engagement, and stewardship at all levels to retain and increase annual giving
Work with ED and Board to identify and develop plans to cultivate individual donors
Identify grant opportunities that align with UAF’s mission and programs and maintain grant calendar
Develop and write clear and effective foundation and corporate grant proposals and reports
Assist in securing corporate sponsorships and support
Develop and execute annual program specific appeals
Manage and grow the monthly giving program
Track and analyze giving
Management of Gifts
Ensure accurate maintenance of donor records and information in Bloomerang (donor database)
Write thank you/acknowledgement letters to donors and work with ED to acknowledge top donors
Manage UA teacher grant requests including collection, award letters and reports
Provide a creative and thoughtful approach to donor appreciation
Marketing and Communication
Manage social media sites and create content to support relevant posts 2-3 times/week
Coordinate donor communications
Manage and update our website content
Oversee and collaborate with UA on the production of our annual joint impact report
Coordinate special mailings to donors and prospects
Other Expectations
Maintain appropriate confidentiality for students, alumni, and donors, as well as for organization’s finances, personnel, and operations
Remain current on fundraising best practices, marketing and public relations, special event management, volunteer recruitment and retention, and grants management procedures being utilized in the nonprofit sector.
Stay abreast of the KC educational and charter school landscape
Required Education & Experience:
Bachelor's Degree in English, marketing, business, communications or related field
At least five years of nonprofit fund development experience utilizing a variety of cultivation and solicitation techniques preferred
Experience with special event planning and management
Demonstrated success in recruiting and stewarding high-level volunteers, donors, and sponsors
Excellent verbal and written communication, presentation, and networking skills
Detail-oriented
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of the KC metro philanthropy community
Proactive, able to work with minimum direct supervision and take initiative
Experience with Bloomerang
Ability to work collaboratively with team members, board members, and volunteers
Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently and meet established deadlines
Experience with a variety of social media platforms
Proficiency with Google Drive (docs, sheets, forms, slides), Constant Contact, and Excel
Experience with major giving
Salary and Benefits
13 days of paid vacation that increases annually up to 3 weeks+ (with discretion) after the 3rd year anniversary
16 additional paid holidays per year
7 paid personal/health days off
