Job Summary

CSX Technology is looking for an experienced Operations Research Scientist for the Operations Research (OR) Group. This individual’s domain of expertise should be on the development of MIP, heuristic and algorithmic solutions to industry specific problems, as well as high quality implementation of such solutions. Individual will develop decision support systems, manage their implementation, and provide support and maintenance.

Individual will define system scope, objectives and requirements based on standards and guidance from architects and senior team members, as well as collaborate with other organizations within the company. Interact with internal customers to identify business requirements and develop the best course of actions to meet their needs.

Primary Activities and Responsibilities

Actively engage with business, internal technical and external technology vendor teams to define, design, and develop new business applications.

Provide leadership and technical direction to team members and monitor the deliverables of the technical team. Project management and planning skills, risk mitigation, timeline and deadline assessment. Ability to contingency plan, analyze systems for efficiencies, and develop test case scenarios.

Formulate mathematical models and apply different optimization methods by using or developing requisite software for strategic/tactical/operational decision making, policy formulation, and other related managerial functions

Build and implement optimization models in the railroad transportation industry using solution approaches that include linear and mixed integer programming, meta-heuristics, and network flow algorithms

Utilize computer programming skills and relational database systems to develop optimization applications

Analyze and enhance existing code of projects in development

Perform analytics support to various company initiatives. Collect data and perform simulation and/or statistical analysis to extrapolate alternate scenarios

Roll out new OR tools and train end users

Convert OR tool prototypes into production

Manage university and outside consultant projects

Minimum Qualifications

Master's Degree, and 3 or more years of experience in with object oriented programming in C#, C++ or Java at a level that would be required of a research or industry implementation

Preferred Qualifications

PHD and 5 or more years of experience in with object oriented programming in C#, C++ or Java at a level that would be required of a research or industry implementation.

Experience in the transportation industry

Knowledge and Skills

Knowledge of Visual Studio, Eclipse, or related Integrated Development Environment (IDE)

Knowledge of Object Oriented Programming in C#, Java or C++, and/or Python

Knowledge of relational database systems (Oracle, SQL Server, writing SQL)

Optimization solvers such as Gurobi, CPLEX

Knowledge of custom data structures and their implementation

Knowledge of routing/network algorithms and their implementation
