***** Please note that this is a 20 hour position *****Shift:11a-9p10 hours Saturday, 10 hours the following SundayUnder direction of Supervisor, Orthopaedic Technicians, this position is responsible for providing orthopaedic services to patients.Responsibilities include:Removing and applying casts and supportive dressings.Preparing, setting up and applying traction and assisting with the application of complicated orthopaedic procedures, i.e., Halos and K-wires.Maintaining, dispensing and ordering supplies and equipment necessary to stock orthopaedic facilities.Manufacturing orthopaedic items to specifications set by physician.Assisting physician with fracture reduction, setting dislocations and suture removal.Distributing orthopaedic aids such as crutches and canes and instructing patients in their use.Calling patient report to floor including work-up by physician and additional patient history.Transporting patients with cervical spine and femur fractures from Emergency Room to floor.Under direction of physician, ordering X-ray series, post reduction films or repeat X-rays.Preparing patients for sterile procedures involving joint aspirations, injections and minor surgery.Performing routine procedures for admitting patients such as drawing blood, catheterizing male patients, electrocardiograms and recording vital signs.Instructing patients in cast care, simple exercises, preventive measures, and proper body mechanics.Minimum Requirements:Experience as an orthopaedic technicianAbility to apply castsGood interpersonal skillsGood communication skills in an Ambulatory Care SettingMassachusetts General Hospital is an Affirmative Action Employer.
