Fall 2025The Greenberg-Starr Department of Chinese invites applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Chinese language, literature, and culture. Candidates may be specialists in any historical era and genre of Chinese literature, with priority given to those with experience teaching undergraduate courses in Chinese language and traditional Chinese literature and culture, including poetry, prose, and drama, as well as topical courses not confined to a single historical period.Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must have the Ph.D. by September 2025, native or near-native proficiency in Modern Standard Chinese (“Mandarin”) and English, and a commitment to high-quality undergraduate education and mentoring a diverse student population.The typical teaching load will be 2 fall semester courses, 2 spring semester courses, and 1 Winter Term course in every other year. During Winter Term, the new colleague will join the team teaching beginning Chinese. Typically, in each fall and spring semester, the new colleague will teach 1 language course and 1 course in English on literature or culture. The new colleague will also contribute to the college-wide curriculum, including the first-year seminar program, and may contribute to the programs in Comparative Literature and Literary Studies.Candidates should provide evidence of commitment to excellent teaching, potential for excellence in scholarship, and the ability to innovate in the design and teaching of courses in both English and Chinese.Middlebury College is a top-tier liberal arts college committed to excellence in faculty teaching and research.
