General Information:James Madison University (JMU) invites applications for the next Dean of the College of Arts and Letters (CAL). The dean will be a strategic and inclusive leader who will inspire and support faculty, staff and students. The College of Arts and Letters empowers students to become reflective lifelong learners who can address today's social, cultural and political challenges through inclusive awareness, creative thinking, problem solving, communication and responsive, ethical leadership. CAL is a strong, vibrant college of ten academic departments in the humanities, social sciences, media and communication arts. CAL houses several interdisciplinary centers and institutes and has strengths in global education and community engagement. The college employs 270 full-time faculty and 50 staff members and enrolls over 3,100 undergraduate majors and 150 graduate students. CAL faculty embrace the teacher-scholar model and welcome applicants from arts and letters disciplines and those committed to working across them.

Duties and Responsibilities:Provide academic, intellectual, administrative and budgetary leadership for the college.Work collaboratively with academic units and centers to advance the priorities outlined in the CAL 2024-28 Strategic Plan:Strengthen community and global engagement.Provide inclusive and equitable work environments.Secure and steward resources to sustainably support teaching, research and creative activities.Champion the recruitment, development, inclusion and retention of diverse and highly qualified faculty, students and staff.Advocate for faculty, staff and student interests to internal and external constituents, build strong campus and community partnerships and champion the liberal arts.Raise the visibility of the college through advancement and development endeavors.Support faculty research and creative endeavors, pedagogical innovations, curricular innovations and other scholarly activities.Facilitate innovation, communication and coordination of the college's contributions to the fulfillment of JMU's mission and vision.Qualifications:An earned terminal degree in a relevant discipline from an accredited institution of higher education.A strong record of teaching, scholarship and university or professional experience commensurate with an appointment as a tenured full professor within CAL.Minimum of five years of progressive administrative experience at the academic unit level or above.Minimum of five years of supervisory experience.Demonstrated experience with budgetary processes and financial statements.Evidence of strong communication and interpersonal skills, as well as a collaborative and transparent leadership style.Strong record of supporting faculty, staff, and students.Additional Posting Information:Candidates should complete the online application and submit the following:Curriculum VitaeCover Letter that discusses the applicant's:Leadership philosophyCommitment to creating inclusive work and scholarly environmentsPreparedness to lead in a large, student-centered research universityAreas of research or scholarly interestContact information for three professional referencesJMU's Dual Career and Community Resources Program is available for candidates that will be relocating to the area.
