The Department of Clinical Sciences in Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University invites applications for a full-time faculty appointment in large animal internal medicine (LAIM) at the assistant professor level in the clinical or unmodified track, depending on the interests and strengths of the applicant; both tracks are eligible for continuous term (tenure-equivalent). The successful applicant is expected to provide advanced internal medicine care in the Hospital for Large Animals (HLA), contribute to pre-clinical and clinical teaching in the DVM program, mentor residents and interns, and engage in research and scholarly activity. Current research strengths in LAIM include respiratory medicine, clinical pharmacology, and critical care medicine.The HLA (

) is a full-service hospital with an annual caseload of approximately 2000 cases. Competition and pleasure horses are the majority of the caseload (85%), with the remaining caseload primarily comprised of small ruminants, camelids, and companion swine. In addition to internal medicine, specialty services include surgery, ultrasound, and equine sports medicine. The HLA is supported by outstanding diagnostic imaging, cardiology, dermatology, ophthalmology, and anesthesiology services.We seek an enthusiastic, team-oriented clinician who will provide outstanding patient care, client care, and service for our referring veterinarians. The service is currently composed of three LAIM specialists. A full-time technician is dedicated to the service and a team of technicians provides 24-hour medical care to hospitalized animals. Intern and resident training are important components of this position. Daytime medical emergency and intensive care cases presented to the HLA are admitted and managed by the Large Animal Medicine service.Clinical track appointments are weighted to clinical and educational activity, but faculty members are still expected to engage in sufficient research and scholarly activity to remain at the forefront of their discipline. Unmodified track appointments are intended for faculty members who wish to develop an independent or collaborative research program, supported by external funding, in addition to excellence in clinical and educational activities. The distribution of activities is dependent on appointment track, typically ranging from 26 – 34 weeks for clinical activity, 4-8 weeks for classroom and laboratory teaching, 4 – 15 weeks for research and scholarly activity, and 4 weeks for administrative service at the assistant professor level. Faculty are initially provided 4 weeks of vacation, plus one week of other time off. The university also recognizes 14-15 other holiday or bonus days.QualificationsMust hold a DVM or equivalent degree. Completion of a residency program in large animal internal medicine approved by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) or the European College of Equine Internal Medicine (ECEIM) by the effective date of appointment is required. Board certification is required at, or no later than two-years following, the date of hire. Demonstrated interest and aptitude in teaching at all levels is required.
