Job SummaryThe Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Utah has a Postdoctoral Scholar position available to join our research team focused on understanding the emissions and transport of greenhouse gases and pollution across the U.S. The postdoc will be carrying out simulations using atmospheric models such as HYSPLIT / STILT, WRF, and other state-of-the-art modeling tools. The atmospheric simulations will be combined with a variety of satellite and in-situ observations to elucidate emissions from urban areas and other sources. There will be opportunities to work with students and scientists across multiple universities and research institutions, as well as opportunities to engage stakeholders about the scientific results.

ResponsibilitiesResponsibilities for this position include:

Analyses of satellite and ground-based observations

Simulations of atmospheric transport with computer models

Critical evaluation of model output

Communicate results in peer-reviewed literature, in conference presentations, and to stakeholders.

The position will be funded for one year from the date of hire with a second year of funding contingent on performance. The position will be available beginning September 1, 2024 and will remain open until filled. Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.

Minimum QualificationsA Ph.D. in the geosciences or related fields (atmospheric sciences, biology, ecology, forestry, environmental sciences, chemistry, statistics, data sciences, computer sciences, engineering or other STEM fields) is required at the time of hire. The successful candidate should have a demonstrated ability to carry out atmospheric modeling, conduct data analyses, and communicate results in peer-reviewed literature and presentations.

PreferencesExperience in atmospheric modeling and computer programming in a Linux or UNIX environment (R, Python, shell scripts, Fortran) is strongly desired.
