The Assistant Library Director plays a critical role in overseeing and enhancing the library's access services, ensuring efficient and effective delivery of library resources and services to the college community. This position involves leadership, strategic planning, and management of access services, including circulation, oversight of the cash drawer, reserve services, interlibrary loan, event and space booking, and user support. The Assistant Library Director collaborates with the Dean of Library and Learning Resources, library faculty and staff, and other college departments to optimize access to library materials and improve user experiences. Occasional evening and weekend hours as required.

Leadership and Management:

Supervise and mentor access services staff, including hiring, training, and evaluating performance.Develop and implement policies and procedures related to circulation, reserves, information access training, interlibrary loan services, and event/space bookings.Ensure compliance with college policies and applicable laws/regulations.Oversee scheduling and workflow to ensure efficient service delivery.Work with the Dean of Library and Learning Services to develop and manage the yearly budget and monitor and analyze usage reports to support budget requests.

Access Services Oversight:

Manage the day-to-day operations of the access services desk, reserve services, information access services, and interlibrary loan functions.Oversee supplies ordering, counting of the cash drawer, liaise with Security and Facilities to perform routine and emergency checks in the Library.Develop strategies to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of access services.Monitor and analyze usage statistics to inform decision-making and service improvements.Address and resolve user issues, complaints, and service challenges promptly.

User Support and Engagement:

Enhance user experience by developing and implementing programs and services that meet the needs of students, faculty, and staff.Conduct user needs assessments and surveys to gather feedback and identify areas for improvement.Collaborate with library staff to deliver instructional sessions and workshops on library resources and services.

Technology and Systems Management:

Oversee the implementation and maintenance of library management systems related to access services.Work with Library faculty, IT staff, and vendors to ensure the smooth operation of technology and troubleshoot issues.Stay updated on emerging technologies and trends in access services to integrate innovative solutions.

Budget and Resource Management:

Assist in the preparation and management of the Library budget.Monitor expenditures and ensure the effective allocation of resources.Manage the procurement and maintenance of library equipment and supplies related to access services.

Collaboration and Communication:

Work closely with other library departments, college faculty, and administrative units to coordinate services and address library-related issues.Participate in library and college committees as assigned.Represent the library at meetings, conferences, and professional organizations.

The Successful Candidate Must Have

Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) or equivalent from an ALA-accredited institution.Minimum of three years of professional library experience.Minimum of two years of experience in a supervisory role within access services or a related area.Strong leadership and management abilities.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.Proficiency with library management systems and related technologies.Demonstrated ability to analyze data and make informed decisions.Experience with budget management and resource allocation.Commitment to providing exceptional user services and support.
