SUMMARYThe Assistant Professor, RFA will conduct translational studies in Gastrointestinal Medical Oncology supporting its mission and goals. Scientific contributions must impact cancer research efforts throughout the institution. This faculty member must perform within the context of an environment that emphasizes collegial and collaborative approaches, leading to the development of an independent research career. Refer to the Gastrointestinal Medical Oncology department web page for additional information about the department and its programs.ESSENTIAL DUTIESAdministrative (1%)Participate in departmental, divisional, institutional meetings, grand rounds, faculty retreats, seminars, and initiatives that align with strategic priorities. This may include traveling to meetings, listening to deliberations, and reporting outcomes appropriately using electronic or written communication.Serve on committees as assigned or requested by the Department Chair or faculty mentor. Provide verbal feedback and didactic information exchange regarding meeting progress and outcomes.Complete institutional required or leadership development trainings.Assume administrative duties as assigned by the Department Chair or faculty mentor.Research (97%)Establish and maintain a translational research program under the mentorship of a senior faculty member. This requires ongoing publications in peer-reviewed journals, development and submission of investigator-initiated grant proposals, and scholarly presentations. Excellent oral and written skills and the ability to synthesize information pertaining to the area of research are required. May be required to provide supervision and training to research support personnel in the implementation of research.Participate in scientific meetings, divisional and departmental seminars/Grand Rounds, and other research-related activities to present experimental results and prepare manuscripts/abstracts for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Present journal clubs, seminars, and posters at various meetings. Domestic and foreign travel are essential.Prepare and submit applications for peer-review funding to various funding agencies.Maintain meticulous records of experimental data and protocols. Provide necessary preliminary data to clinicians for peer-reviewed grant applications.Stay updated on fundamental concepts through literature reviews, seminar attendance, and coursework. Contribute to projects by proposing investigatory directions and alternative interpretations of data.Possess well-developed interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective relationships with peers, senior faculty, and subordinates. Collaborate with multiple investigators to support multi-project grants and work as a team on various projects simultaneously.Supervise the tissue collection and data collection infrastructure for gastric and esophageal cancer and their pre-malignancies. Act as the administrator for the tissue collection project. Conduct translational studies in the laboratory, systematically carrying out experiments to uncover the molecular underpinnings of gastric and esophageal malignancies. Work with clinicians to complete translational projects, prioritize work, and determine necessary equipment for experiments. Deduce and defend results from experiments conducted.Education (2%)Present, participate, and attend educational activities, conferences, and meetings requiring verbal interaction with colleagues throughout the hospital, campus, and other institutions.Serve as a mentor and provide a stimulating educational experience for graduate, postdoctoral, and other trainees in the department.Act as a role model to colleagues, students, and support staff. Mentor and train junior colleagues.Extramural ServiceReview, understand, synthesize, and provide editorial commentary on manuscripts, grant applications, and research literature, verbally or electronically.Disseminate research findings through posters, talks, and associated abstracts at national scientific meetings.EDUCATIONRequired:

Doctorate-level degree in a field appropriate to the faculty role and department mission.Preferred:

PhD, MD, or equivalent degree in a relevant field.EXPERIENCERequired:

At least two (2) years as a postdoctoral fellow or instructor, or equivalent time as a basic scientist.Preferred:

Experience in a research environment involving scientific research disciplines, either at a U.T. component or another academic institution, or equivalent experience. Evidence of consistent high-quality research, ability to carry out individual collaborative research, and a dedication to a career in cancer research is required.LICENSURE:
