PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The primary function of the Elementary School Assistant Principal is to provide support and assistance to the Principal in the development and implementation of procedures which will result in the maximum utilization of staff, materials, and facilities as they relate to students in Grades K-5, and the achievement of the objectives of the District.

REPORTS TO:

Elementary School Principal

QUALIFICATIONS:

State of Illinois Professional Educator License – General Administrative K-12 Endorsement

Minimum of three years of previous experience as a building assistant principal, preferably in an urban school setting.

Evidence of instructional leadership with a strong commitment to academic excellence with high expectations of students and staff.

Must have a thorough knowledge of elementary curriculum and curriculum development.

Strong background in Reading with experience with RTI & Data Analysis.

Four years of teaching experience at the elementary level preferred.

Highly effective interpersonal, communication, and public relations skills.

Creativity, flexibility and high energy level.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

Proven record of dynamic educational leadership, including excellent interpersonal and communication skills with students, staff, and parents; strong background in elementary curriculum, instruction, and special education; successful administrative or teaching experience; ability to be a part of an effective management team; ability to work well in a professional community with high expectations for its students and schools.

ASSIGNED RESPONSIBILITIES:

Communication Skills

Communicates and works effectively with staff and parents.

Provides accurate, well-written communications to staff and parents.

Instructional Leadership

Communicates and implements the district’s mission and goals.

Works with Building Principal to create a vision of excellence for the school.

Demonstrates high expectations for staff and students.

Recognizes the qualities of effective instruction.

Assists staff in evaluating instructional effectiveness and setting goals for improvement.

Coordinates the curriculum within the building.

Monitors student progress continually.

Is a visible presence in building to staff and students.

Is continually engaged in school improvement efforts.

Utilizes proven, research-based strategies to improve student performance.

Assists in the direction and supervision of the educational program and the supportive services within the school within the policy structure of the District and the District Administration.

Oversees staff efforts to provide results-oriented strategies for students.

Prepares and monitors budget appropriately according to building needs.

Develops and implements duty rosters for supervision of students.

Interprets and utilizes available data to drive instruction activities.

Organizes and arranges field trips.

Identifies and provides areas for staff development.

Remains current in most effective practices and services for students.

Participates in planning and presentation of regularly scheduled faculty meetings.

Performs all other responsibilities as assigned by the Principal.

Organizational Skills

Monitors and addresses personnel concerns promptly and fairly.

Prepares and interprets reports and records accurately.

Effectively uses available technology to increase office productivity.

Assists in the development and revision of building administrative procedures.

Develops effective policies and procedures with staff input that comply with District policy.

Supports and implements established building policies, procedures, and regulations.

Organizes and supervises all after-school functions in the school.

Fosters a positive, service-oriented atmosphere in the school office.

Student Learning Environment

Maintains a safe and orderly learning environment for students and staff.

Minimizes disruptions to the instructional process.

Promotes a positive school climate.

Communicates effectively with students, parents, staff, and community.

Makes personnel assignments that maximize staff strengths.

Cooperates with staff in developing and supervising student management procedures.

Teacher Performance Improvement

Conferences regularly with staff members to review performance.

Effectively evaluates staff according to the district plan.

Attends and contributes to district-level and other professional meetings.

Encourages professional growth to enhance teacher performance.

Expresses interest and enthusiasm for teaching and learning.

Holds teachers and other staff accountable for student learning.

Coaches and counsels staff in a helpful and supportive manner.

Coordinates necessary support services for students.
