This Safety Specialist will inspect all construction work sites and issue work permits for confined space entry, hotworks, trenching and excavation, high work, and similar hazardous work. Conduct workplace injury investigations, develop technical reports to document the incident, and make necessary recommendations to prevent future occurrences. Prepare for, respond to, and mitigate emergencies which include but are not limited to fires, flooding, and hazardous materials incidents. The use of personal protective equipment including hazardous entry (flame and chemical) suits and respiratory protection up to and including SCBA. This position is designated as essential. Personnel in designated essential positions are expected to report to work as required in the event of an emergency to sustain institutional services or protect assets. Oversee and manage small projects or inspection programs. Performs other duties as assigned.THIS ROLE WILL SUPPORT UTSW CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES.The ideal candidate will have OSHA 10, OSHA 30 and OSHA 501. Strong preference for candidate with ASP or CSP. Have completed course programs SSH, CSHO, SHEP.Experience and EducationBachelor's degree in safety related field strongly preferred and two (2) years directly related safety experienceEducation may be considered in lieu of experience requirementsMaster's degree in safety related field and no experienceProfessional certification pertinent to specific safety specialty is preferred and may be considered in lieu of degree with four (4) years of directly related safety experiencePertinent Military experience may be considered for some of the required experienceAdvanced degrees (Bachelor's or Master's) may be considered in lieu of experience requirementsJob DutiesInvestigates safety and environmental incidents; identifying causes and how to prevent their recurrenceEnsures employee health & safety standards are met in all areas of the organizationPerforms surveys of laboratories and facilities to ensure adherence to safety regulation and proceduresIdentifies potential safety hazards, prepares reports on conditions, and takes action to mitigate identified deficienciesEnsures proper use and disposal of hazardous materials and wasteProvide assistance and safety training to departmentsThis position is designated as essential. Working conditions involve more than average exposure to hazardous equipment or materials.
