The class of Police Investigative Specialist, Trainee is intended to familiarize and train persons interested in a civilian law enforcement career in Investigations with the Police Department. The incumbent in this classification is assigned to one of NOPD’s investigatory areas that include the Field Operations Bureau, Alternative Police Response Bureau, Public Integrity Bureau, Special Victims Unit or the Applicant Investigations Unit and will receive training in a variety of tasks in support of law enforcement activities including crime prevention, investigations, and response where full police powers are unnecessary. Duties include receiving training in handling calls for service not requiring the presence of a sworn officer and may include collecting and booking property and evidence, testifying in court, responding to the scene to perform support services and to document and collect physical evidence as required, taking photos, canvassing for witnesses, and the preparation of reports; and related duties as required.Possession of a valid driver's license.*A High School Diploma or GED issued by a State Department of Education.*

All related previous experience will be considered for qualification purposes; however, credit on the rating of training and experience will only be given for experience gained within the last ten (10) years.This is an original entrance examination.The Police Department will conduct a background investigation which will include a computer voice stress analysis (CVSA), a urinalysis to detect usage of illegal narcotic substances, and a check of arrest and conviction record.All applicants are required to assist and cooperate with the Civil Service Department and the Police Department in obtaining past employment records or personal history information.
