Department SummaryThe Geography Department is an instructional department within the College of Arts and Sciences that supports significant research activities in various types of geographic study. The Department of Geography has 27 Faculty, 125+ undergraduate majors, and 40+ graduate students.

Research and graduate education in the Department of Geography focuses on the following subfields:

Geographic information science: cartography, GIS, data analysis and visualization, spatial analysis and modeling;

Human geography: political-ethnic, cultural, human-environment relations, and behavioral geography;

Physical geography: Quaternary studies, biogeography, climatology and climatic change, geomorphology;

Environmental studies: forest and ecosystem issues, river and watershed issues, biodiversity and global environmental change, policy and law, environmental applications of GIS;

Geographic education.

Position SummaryThe Department of Geography is seeking applicants for its open research assistant, research associate, and postdoctoral scholar pool. Positions are limited-duration appointments potentially renewable.

Research Assistants, Research Associates, or Postdocs will work under the supervision of the Department Head or Principal Investigator. Research Assistant/Associates will be expected to work independently on projects.

Minimum RequirementsTo qualify for the rank of Research Assistant (Type B):

BA/BS in Geography or related field.

To qualify for the rank of Research Associate or Postdoctoral Scholar:

PhD in Geography or related field.

Professional Competencies

Research background in Geography or a related field.

Demonstrated potential to contribute positively to its diverse community.

Preferred Qualifications

For the rank of research assistant, MA/MS in Geography or related field is preferred.
