The purpose of this position is to perform professional land surveying with primary responsibility for planning and supervising municipal survey crew operations. Work is independently performed under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of Engineering, and is reviewed upon completion through consultations, oral and written reports, and evaluation of results.

Responsibilities

Professional certification of all survey maps and work products prepared by the City of Wilmington’s Geomatics Division. Perform complex professional land surveying calculations. Research land records and prepare legal descriptions for plats of survey.Review and approve plats submitted for acceptance prior to recordation for compliance with applicable governmental laws and regulations. Oversee monumentation program.Participate in the preparation of specifications, evaluate proposals, develop recommendations, and negotiate with consulting professional surveying firms.Consult with and advise private-sector professional land surveyors, other municipal departments, county, state and federal agencies, engineers, architects, developers, attorneys, private citizens and contractors regarding surveying issues.Plan, schedule, supervise and review the work of crews involved in conducting various surveys (e.g., land and boundary, topographic, hydrographic, as-built) to determine distance, elevation, property boundaries, and other features of the earth's surface. Coordinate inter-departmental projects with municipal maintenance crews.Formulate and implement policies and operating procedures relative to the Geomatics Division, including the hiring, evaluation, discipline and termination of survey personnel. Ensure staff is properly trained in technical operating procedures and safety policies.Oversee the budgeting, purchase, maintenance, calibration, and replacement of robotic total stations, global positioning system instruments, data collectors, vehicles, tools, and supplies.Perform other related duties as required.

Minimum Requirements

Formal Education

Two-year associate’s degree, diploma or equivalent from a college, technical, business, vocational, or correspondence school.Experience

Minimum 5 years of experience.Certification & Other Requirements

North Carolina Professional Land Surveyor’s license.Class C Driver's license.

Physical Demands:Exerting 20-50 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 10-20 lbs. constantly.
