Director of Orchestra Studies, Assistant ProfessorRESPONSIBILITIES/POSITION SUMMARY:

The University of New Mexico is seeking a tenure track Director of Orchestral Studies. This Assistant Professor will conduct the UNM Symphony Orchestra, teach undergraduate and graduate conducting seminar classes and orchestral repertoire classes, supervise graduate conducting recitals, provide leadership for the orchestral area, and supervise orchestral graduate students. Administrative duties will include budget management, scheduling of concerts and venues, and the organization of and participation in recruitment activities. This faculty member will teach other courses as appropriate and based on the expertise of the candidate and establish an active schedule of recruitment and interaction with orchestra directors and music educators in the metropolitan area, throughout the state, nationally, and internationally. This faculty member will recruit excellent graduate conducting students in order to further the growth of the orchestral area. This faculty member will work collaboratively with faculty in applied instrumental instruction, music education, and conducting to create an inclusive environment. This faculty member will engage actively with the larger arts and music education community in New Mexico.Affirmative Action Considerations:

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Doctorate in Music required by August 2025.Three years of orchestral conducting experience, either university, professional, or community orchestras.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Artist level conductor.Two years secondary-school level teaching/conducting (can include youth orchestras).Vision to create and ability to execute recruiting initiatives.Strong oral and written communication, organizational and administrative skills.A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.A demonstrated commitment to scholarship and a vision for future creative work and/or performance activity.Experience with mentorship.Engagement and experience with community-oriented ensembles including but not limited to youth ensemble conducting, summer music festivals, and community ensembles.Application Instructions

Finalists will interview with the Search Committee, the Chair of the Department of Music, and the Dean of the College of Fine Arts. The finalists will conduct a rehearsal with the UNM Symphony Orchestra and teach a class in conducting and possibly conduct Sinfonia. Meetings will also take place with UNM faculty, staff, and students. Only complete applications will be considered.INTERVIEW:

Two or more finalists will be invited to the University of New Mexico to interview and audition for the search committee and administration as well as meet students and faculty.Applicants who are appointed to a UNM faculty position are required to provide an official certification of successful completion of all degree requirements prior to their initial employment with UNM.For Best Consideration
