The

Department of Public Health, Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program (CLPPP)

is recruiting for an

Environmental Health Specialist III (EHS III)

to conduct environmental investigations for lead burdened children and to assist in implementing activities to reduce the potential for children being exposed or at-risk children being further exposed to environmental lead hazards.

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

Conduct environmental investigations according to the Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention guidelines

Record all environmental case management activities and inform the resident family and/or property owner of the environmental investigation results; and recommend control measures

Meet as needed with the Public Health Nurse(s) to coordinate case management services

Identify high-risk housing and occupancy to target lead awareness, education and outreach

Attend meetings, coalitions, and task force groups when issues relating to childhood lead poisoning are on the agenda

Respond, as necessary, with progressive enforcement actions to complaints of lead-based paint hazards. Document and investigate complaints from agencies, businesses and the public of unsafe renovation and remodeling activities that put a child at risk of lead exposure

Coordinate efforts with local enforcement agencies and take other steps to secure enforcement when property owners fail to comply with lead hazard reduction or elimination

Develop and implement training programs for investigations by enforcement agency personnel

Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program

CLPPP provides community education to increase awareness of the potential danger of children's exposure to lead, along with home environmental screenings, public health nurse case management and monitoring child health providers to ensure lead testing in high-risk children.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Work Schedule:

May be required to perform duties on-call after normal working hours and on weekends.Physical:

May be required to bend, stoop, kneel, crawl or hike when necessary during the investigation process.

Lead Inspector Certification:

Must maintain a Lead Inspector/Risk Assessor certificate from the California Department of Public Health.Travel/License:

Travel throughout the County is required to perform duties in the field. Employees will be required to make provision for transportation (mileage reimbursement is available). At the time of hire, a valid California Class C driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be produced and maintained for the individual providing the transportation.Assignment:

Must be willing to accept work assignments in the following areas:

Rancho Cucamonga, Hesperia, and San Bernardino.

Must indicate a willingness to work in all three (3) geographic areas on the Application in order to be eligible for these positions.

Minimum Requirements

Certificate:

Must possess and maintain a valid certificate of registration as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) issued by the State of California Department of Public Health (CDPH). Some assignments require specialized certificates. Be sure to indicate any special certifications on the Supplemental Questionnaire.

AND

Experience:

One and one-half (1-1/2) years of experience as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist performing environmental health inspections and investigations in California.

Note:

Experience as a trainee is

not

qualifying and should be clearly separated from journey-level experience on the Application and Supplemental Questionnaire.

Desired Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess experience with lead sampling and inspections, leading team projects and collaborating with code enforcement agencies, engaging with municipal building officials and possess effective communication with community members.
