Postdoctoral Fellow in Osteoarchaeology

The Department of Archaeology and Classical Studies is the largest archaeological research environment in Sweden. Both the research and the education at the Department comprise different areas and time periods. The Department consists of six sections: Archaeology, Stockholm Numismatic Institute, Archaeological Research Laboratory, Osteoarchaeological Research Laboratory, Classical Archaeology and Ancient History, and the Centre for Palaeogenetics.Project descriptionThe Department of Archaeology and Classical Studies is seeking a 2-year postdoctoral researcher in Osteoarchaeology, based at the Osteoarchaeological Research Laboratory. The researcher will join the project Pioneers of northern Scandinavia, financed by the Swedish Research Council.The purpose of the project is to shed light on the chronology and origin of the first humans in northern Scandinavia, to recreate the prehistoric environments that the first humans experienced, and to reconstruct colonization processes for various animals, mostly mammals and primarily those associated with human activity. Through new knowledge of reconstructed coastal environments and environmental changes, the pioneer settlements and their adaptive strategies can be identified.Main responsibilitiesThe position consists of own research and initiation of externally funded research projects. In addition, the holder is expected to participate in teaching (maximum 20%) on basic and/or advanced levels. The position is mainly directed towards analyses of prehistoric zooarchaeological finds, interpreting the adaptive strategies of humans in different time periods and contexts. The results are compiled for publication in scientific journals, as well as communicated in the media and at scientific conferences. It is also expected that you will participate in the daily activities at the Osteoarchaeological Research Laboratory.Qualification requirementsPostdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.Assessment criteriaThe degree must be completed at the latest prior to the employment decision is made, but no more than three years before the closing date. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances. Special reasons refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions of trust in trade unions, service in the total defence, or other similar circumstances as well as clinical attachment or service/assignment relevant to the subject area.In the appointment process, special attention will be paid to research skills in the subject area. A demonstrated track record in analyses of prehistoric zooarchaeological - burnt and unburnt – assemblages is a requirement. Knowledge and experience of taphonomy and the faunal history of Scandinavia are important merits. It is also advantageous to have knowledge in one or more of the subjects of archaeology, GIS, geology, and/or ecology. Since the position involves integration within a larger team of researchers and students, personal skills such as good collaborative and analytical skills, ability to work independently and take own initiatives, and a well-developed sense of responsibility are considered additional merits. A well-developed ability and track record of oral and written communication in English is also considered an important merit.Terms of employmentThe position involves a full-time employment for two years.
