Up to 75%Summary of FunctionsThe Forgen Safety Specialist supports the implementation and administration of the Forgen Safety and Health Program. Primary responsibility is to support selected projects across the company, including high-profile and/or high-demand projects where superior safety and health performance is critical. This role is fully engaged in Forgen’s Incident and Injury Free (IIF) Commitment Journey. The Safety Specialist conducts site safety inspections/audits, reviews and develops project Health and Safety Plans (HASPs), attends on-site safety meetings with Forgen project management team, develops and conducts on-the-job training, and facilitates incident investigations. Responsible for communicating information, leading, coaching, and training all levels of employees in safety and health compliance, policies, and best practices.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesEmbrace Forgen’s Core Values in all aspects of the job.Perform the roles and responsibilities for Safety Specialist as listed on the Accountability Chart.Drive a safety culture which promotes Incident and Injury Free Performance.Provide day-to-day Safety and Health support that is effective and suitable to achieve Forgen objectives.Provide regular, reliable data for the purposes of monitoring Safety and Health performance.Create, improve, and comply with project Health and Safety Plan (HASP).Ensure that Forgen Safety and Health requirements are widely understood and implemented.Apply hazard identification and risk assessment processes at project sites and ensure implementation of appropriate control measures.Participate in the development and review process of Activity Hazard Analysis (AHAs).Ensure all Safety Observations, inspections, training data, project specific information, and incident reports are entered in Safety Mojo.Promote Safety and Health awareness through conducting new hire orientation, safety training and participating in Incident and Injury Free (IIF) campaigns.Conduct effective investigation of incidents and near misses, develop final reports and follow up corrective actions.Participate fully in all compliance assurance audits, inspections and project meetings.Serve as a liaison between Forgen and client representatives.Perform inspections i.e., fire extinguisher, portable ladder, body harness etc.Conduct weekly site walk-throughs and provide updates.Review project schedules and communicate with the direct line of reporting about conditions and safety and health concerns.Perform air sampling, monitoring, data logging, calibrating instruments and basic IH tasks.Follow up on certification, training, medical screening expiration dates of project employees and schedule accordingly.Identify the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) needs, order and issue PPE as required.Identify third party training needs and notify Project team.Develop safety and health related training packages and ensure project personnel are trained as per the Training Matrix.Perform additional assignments and special projects as directed.Experience/EducationBachelors or advanced degree in safety, engineering, construction or a related discipline.A minimum of five years of experience managing safety programs in civil, environmental, or general construction companies.Valid Driver’s License and ability to drive on behalf of company business.Preferred safety training (company will provide additional training as necessary):40-Hour HAZWOPER TrainingCompetent Person Safety Training8-Hour Supervisory TrainingOSHA 500 Certification30-Hour OSHA Construction Safety TrainingEM385-1-1 related coursesFirst Aid and CPRBCSP designation (e.g., CSP, CHST, STS)MSHA related coursesKnowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesExcellent computer skills including knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office.Above average oral and written communication skills.Highly proactive and responsive to internal and external customers.Ability to exercise independent judgment and advise project leadership on complex issues.Commitment to a safe work environment by understanding basic behavior-based safety programs.Demonstrated ability to successfully influence outcomes and deliver results.Ability to work independently and resolve practical problems.Ability to read and understand project plans and specifications.Capacity to handle pressure and make correct decisions under duress.Be a team player and integrate into the project team.Ability to understand and be knowledgeable of project contract documents and requirements.Physical DemandsThe following physical activities or abilities are commonly associated with the performance of this position:Ability to communicate effectively with vendors, management, and other co-workers.Sitting for extended periods is common.No heavy lifting is expected; exertion of up to 25 pounds of force occasionally may be required.Good manual dexterity for the use of common office equipment.The job is primarily performed indoors in a traditional office setting and occasionally outdoors at construction sites.Perks and BenefitsForgen offers a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, a retirement plan, employer paid short-term disability, accident insurance, and more.
