Position Summary:

Willamette University seeks an engaged teacher and scholar to serve as the Class of 1959 Endowed Visiting Assistant Professor and Director for Willamette University at Zena (WUZ) and Land-based Education. Reporting to the Dean of Willamette College, the Class of '59 Visiting Assistant Professor will teach three courses per year in the area of natural resources management, forest science, or sustainable agriculture, and also oversee and advance student and faculty field research, sustainable forestry, ecological restoration, and sustainable agriculture at its 305-acre field station 15 miles west of the main campus in Salem Oregon. The successful candidate will have an advanced degree in a relevant field, a strong background in sustainable land resource management and environmental stewardship, teaching experience, a demonstrated ability to engage with faculty, students, and the public, and a commitment to advancing the university's diverse and inclusive environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

Teaching and Education

Contribute to the development and delivery of undergraduate courses in sustainable agriculture, agroforestry, ecological restoration and/or sustainable forestry, both at Zena and on our main campus in Salem.

Share expertise and enthusiasm for land-based education with students and colleagues.

Facilitate Student and Faculty Field Research

Work collaboratively with faculty to facilitate and support student and faculty research initiatives.

Provide guidance and resources to ensure the success of research conducted at WUZ.

Sustainable Land Management

Working with the WUZ planning committee and university administration, implement and oversee sustainable land management practices, including forestry, agroforestry, ecological restoration, and sustainable agriculture.

Supervise day-to-day operations of WUZ.

Coordinate with other university units, including Facilities and Grounds.

Supervise a select group of student workers.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g., Environmental Science, Forestry, Agriculture, Agroecology).

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Experience in university-level teaching.

Interest in gaining mastery of a range of tools, equipment, and technologies.

Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. in a relevant field (e.g., Environmental Science, Forestry, Agriculture, Agroecology), or any combination of education and experience that provides comparable skills and knowledge.

Experience in sustainable land management, forestry, ecological restoration, and/or sustainable agriculture.

Familiarity and competence with tools, equipment, and technical systems associated with the job.

Comfortable engaging with diverse groups, including faculty, students, and the public.

Demonstrated competence in land management, facility operations, and student worker supervision.
