Under supervision, performs semi-skilled and labor-based line work in the maintenance, repair, and installation of communication cables and infrastructure for the City’s fiber network. Work may also include installation of copper wiring, Category 5/6 cable, and emerging wireless and microwave technologies.Position Responsibilities:Assists cable splicers with job set up, safety, and materials for splicing cable.Assists line crew with all construction-based projects for underground and overhead cable installations.Digs holes and trenches to accommodate pipework as well as christy boxes, junctions, vaults, and manholes and conduit installation.Assists line crew with assembling and installing poles and cross arms, prepares hardware and tools for line workers.Assists with installation of various types of cables including copper, data, category 5 and 6, and fiber optic.Works with various types of equipment including bucket trucks, line trucks, pulling packs, and Posi-plus or Hogg-Davis.Works in proximity to other departments' infrastructure including confined spaces, vaults, utility holes, and medium and high voltage equipment and cabling.Work Location:

Incumbent will conduct the majority of work at various City Agencies throughout the City of San Francisco as well as some remote CCSF facilities outside of the City and County of San Francisco. The incumbent's primary reporting and dispatch location will be 200 Paul Ave., San Francisco, CA 94124.Nature of Work:

Candidate must be willing to work a 40-hour week as determined by the department, including mandatory rotations at Swing Shift (3:00pm - 11:00pm) and Graveyard Shift (11:00pm - 7:00am). Travel within San Francisco may be required.Job Appointment Type:

Temporary Exempt (TEX) - Full Time (4 positions) are excluded by the Charter from the competitive civil service examination process. The successful candidate shall serve at the discretion of the appointing officer. This position has an anticipated duration of up to thirty-six (36) months.How to qualify

Education:

Possession of a high school diploma or proof of successful completion of an equivalency test (G.E.D or California High School Proficiency Examination).Experience:

Two (2) years of full-time verifiable general electrical and mechanical work experience in maintenance/construction.License or Certificate:

Possession and maintenance of, or the ability to obtain and maintain, a current valid California Class C driver license.Desirable Qualifications:Knowledge of: basic maintenance, repair, and installation of communications and traffic and street lighting systems, transit power lines, and overhead and underground electrical transmission lines including the use and care of basic hand tools used by an electrical line crew; safe working practices and the correct and safe use of basic tools, equipment, and Personal Protection Equipment (PPE).Skill in the care and use of basic tools for general laboring and electrical maintenance work (e.g., hand tools, pneumatic tools, pavement breakers, etc.).Ability to effectively interact with co-workers, subordinates, representatives from other divisions and/or departments, and the public.NOTE:1.
