Description

Under direct supervision, the Welder performs various forms of welding such as maintenance, fabrication, brazing, and cutting metal components to assemble structural forms. Using knowledge of welding techniques, the Welder will assist and support various departments, and will have a primary job assignment to a specific department.

Essential duties include fabricating equipment by cutting, burning, and welding metals, reviewing layouts or work orders, and using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to ensure safety. The role also involves preparing surfaces for welding, setting up and assembling workpieces, operating various power tools and equipment, and performing maintenance or repairs on metal parts and structures. Welders are expected to work collaboratively with team members and maintain a high standard of safety and compliance in all operations. Other duties may be assigned as needed.

General Duties & Responsibilities:Fabricates equipment by cutting, burning, and welding various metals, including aluminum and cast ironAssists with labor duties in the shop during downtimePerforms different types of welding, such as maintenance, fabrication, brazing, and cutting, using gas and electric welding equipmentReviews layouts, blueprints, diagrams, or work orders to prepare for welding or cutting metal componentsWelds metal parts together according to material layouts, diagrams, work orders, or verbal instructions, using gas or electric welding materials, or brazing techniquesUses Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to protect against glare, burns, and flying debrisCleans and prepares metal surfaces for weldingSets up, assembles, and tacks welded partsPreheats workpieces before welding or bending using a torchConnects hoses from torches to oxygen and fuel tanks, then adjusts valves to release the gas mixtureOperates power tools on ground surfaces and sometimes from ladders, powered by either electric generators or pneumatic sourcesUses Gasoline Welding Machines, hand tools, cutting wheels, and grinders as neededMonitors materials, events, or environmental conditions to detect and assess problemsFills cavities or corrects deformations in parts, and hammers out bulges and bends in metal workpiecesChips or grinds off excess welds, slag, or spatter using hand scrapers, power chippers, portable grinders, or arc-cutting equipmentRepairs equipment using the appropriate welding techniques and toolsFixes broken or cracked parts, fills small holes, and increases the size of metal parts with welding techniquesRebuilds worn or defective surfaces on metal componentsWelds in various positions, including flat, horizontal, vertical, or overheadInspects workpieces for defects, using straightedges or templates to ensure they meet specificationsDismantles metal assemblies or cuts scrap metal using flame-cutting torches or plasma-arc cutting equipmentSecures workpieces using hoists, cranes, wires, banding machines, or hand toolsSelects electrodes based on the bead pattern and metal thicknessPerforms other related tasks such as flame cutting and grindingCommunicates with supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates via phone, email, or in personInspects equipment, structures, or materials to identify errors, problems, or defectsRequirements

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or GED requiredSeven (7) years of directly related work experience in welding requiredCertificate in Welding or a related field preferredSkills and Competencies:

Knowledge of OSHA Welding safety standardsAbility to work independently and precisely in a variety of environments (flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead)Ability to lift and carry materials, work outdoors, and operate gas and electric welding equipmentStrong attention to detail and ability to identify defects in workpiecesReliable, responsible, and able to maintain composure in high-stress situationsBilingual in English and Spanish preferred
