INTRODUCTION
Under the supervision of the Medical Director/designee, the Nurse Practitioner shall provide the Department of Corrections, Central Detention Facility and Correctional Treatment Facility, Health Services Division, comprehensive medical care as delineated by UHC. The Nurse Practitioner provides expanded care to patients by exercising independent judgment related to patient assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases, counseling, and comprehensive care to DC Department of Corrections' patients.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Provides preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic services to patients.
* Obtains medical histories and conducts physical examinations and evaluations as appropriate. * Orders and interprets laboratory/radiology testing, as appropriate. * Makes diagnoses and prescribes therapeutic measures of care including legend drugs and controlled substances. * Counsels patient and provides teaching for health maintenance and specific healthproblems. * Makes appropriate referrals to specialists and hospitals. * Recognizes and manages common acute and chronic illnesses within her/his scope of practice. * Develops and participates in sick call, urgent care, intake, chronic care, and screening programs. * Provides immediate emergency care as needed and makes arrangement for transport to appropriate hospital or health service when necessary. * Collaborates, as needed, with social worker, discharge planners, mental health clinicians, medical-clerical assistant, and physician responsible for team regarding treatments, referrals, and follow-up care of patients. * Provides coverage as needed to care for the patients to include at least one holiday shift per year. * Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION
* Must have current DC RN license with certification by the ANCC or AANP, DEA license, and CDS license. * 2-3 years of experience in ambulatory care setting with some contact with homeless patients preferred, but not required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills. * Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities. * Ability to analyze medical records and to conduct medical/nursing research. * Ability to perform complex medical record reviews and to evaluate clinical data. * Knowledge and understanding of clinical organization structure, workflow, and operating procedures. * Skill in interpreting information and preparing reports and trend analyses. * Skill in examining and reengineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures. * Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. * Knowledge of nursing theory and practice. * Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications. * Records maintenance skills. * Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements. * Investigative skills pertaining to medical/legal claims and litigation. * Knowledge of current and developing legal issues and trends in area of expertise. * Knowledge of medical malpractice law. * Ability to develop and implement legal strategies and solutions.
SUPERVISORY GUIDELINES
The Nurse Practitioner does not have any direct reports.

The Nurse Practitioner abides by all rules and regulations set forth by applicable licensing and regulatory bodies, as well as UHC and DOC policies and procedures.

The position of Nurse Practitioner requires contact with staff at all levels throughout the organization. There are also external organization relationships that may be a part of the work of this individual.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Some walking, standing, bending and carrying of light items such as books and paper is required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
* Must be physically able to sit, stand, and walk for long periods of time. Must be able to bend, lift, and carry files from one location to another. * Must have visual acuity and the ability to differentiate colors, and sustain long periods of computer usage. * May sit for prolonged periods of time at a desk or in an automobile and/or may use the telephone for long periods of time. * The office environment may be stressful with multiple, time-sensitive tasks to be accomplished within a short period of time. * Must be able to work any time of the day, independently with minimal supervision, be capable of making sound business decisions, and be detail oriented, alert, and self-motivated. * Must be able to effectively manage difficult situations, staff, and customers.
OTHER SIGNIFICANT FACTS
Although the position is assigned a specific shift, this position may be assigned alternate shifts to address the needs of Unity Health Care.
RISKS
The position involves everyday risk and discomforts, which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meetings, training rooms, and other UHC health Care Sites. The work area is adequately lit, heated, and ventilated. The position requires contact with staff at all levels throughout the organization. There are also external organization relationships that may be a part of the work of this individual. All medical services shall be provided according to medically accepted community standards of care. The employee shall provide evidence of a recent (within the past twelve (12) months) health assessment that includes a PPD and/or chest x-ray results.
