WSP is currently initiating a search for a

Consultant, Hazard Mitigation Specialist

to support our

Nashville Office . Be involved in projects with our

Earth & Environment Team

and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.

Your Impact

Working in a team environment to support the technical assistance efforts related to Hazard Mitigation Assistance.

This may include:

Review and/or preparation of HMA grants;

Review and/or preparation of Benefit-Cost Analyses;

Development of Hazard Mitigation Plans that meet Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 (DMA 2000) standards;

Perform risk assessment analyses on hazard data and write significant portions of planning documents;

Evaluate clients’ existing mitigation “capabilities” through on-line research of local plans, regulations, policies and programs, and review of programs and documents;

Support planning team for development of committee and public meeting materials;

Oversee data collection and documentation from clients (state and local government); and

Assist with the identification and description of cost effective, technically feasible, and environmentally sound mitigation actions (projects).

Assist with National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and floodplain management projects.

Provide research and writing tasks as necessary to support a wide range of planning and resiliency projects.

Supporting public and stakeholder engagement activities.

Complete training on assigned tasks.

Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in planning, emergency management, civil/environmental engineering, geography, environmental science, or related field.

3-5 years of relevant experience

Strong work ethic, self-motivated and capable of independent work, but demonstrated ability to work on project teams.

Strong writing and document preparation skills a must; strong MS Office skills, particularly related to planning documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Work sample will be required.

Knowledge of FEMA programs preferred, including working knowledge of federal pre- and post-disaster grant programs including HMA, BRIC, HMGP, FMA and CDBG-DR.

Experience developing or reviewing DMA 2000 hazard mitigation plans preferred.

Knowledge of Hazus/GIS, FEMA Benefit Cost software, EMAP, NFIP and CRS a plus.

Experience with one or more of the following is a plus: hazard mitigation planning, community rating system, comprehensive planning, recovery planning, climate change adaptation planning, resiliency planning, emergency operations planning, energy assurance planning, and business continuity planning.

Capable interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a technical and non-technical audience.

Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

Prior experience related to the line.

A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.
