Position Title

Director of the St. Martin de Porres Center for Health and Human Dignity

Overview

Lead the development of the center and oversee the day-to-day operational management. Foster engagement of students, faculty, and staff across the college and externally by creating a vibrant, collaborative, diverse, and welcoming environment that fosters a Christ-centered community in support of the College mission. Promote and lead the center in establishing a national reputation of academic excellence by bringing together researchers, scholars, teachers, and practitioners who develop and disseminate useful resources to support the ethical practice of humanistic healthcare, consistent with the teachings of the Catholic Church.

Essential Duties:

Create and implement a strategic plan for the center to fulfill its vision and mission and develop annual goals and metrics of assessment to measure progress towards those goals. Chair the center’s Advisory Committee and organize its activities including hosting regular meetings to solicit input, ideas, and feedback. Serve as an

ex officio

member of the Humanities Program Committee and develop initiatives connecting Catholic healthcare with humanistic study. Oversee internal and external communications and marketing including print, web, and social media offered in collaboration with the college’s Marketing & Communications, Academic Affairs, and Media Services. Collaborate with Institutional Advancement to pursue fundraising opportunities including government, foundation, religious, and other not-for-profits, private businesses and corporations, and individual donor opportunities. (40%)

Work closely with the faculty of the School of Nursing and Health Sciences and other faculty across campus to effectively incorporate the college and the center’s Catholic Mission into their health-focused courses and educational practices. Create and support a Faculty Fellows program for faculty who want to spend time in the center developing teaching and scholarly projects on related topics. Develop local, national, and international collaborative relationships with hospitals, healthcare providers, clinics, community health centers, and others to enact the mission of the center. Identify and pursue new curricular and co-curricular student learning opportunities, including courses and course modules, seminars, and a breadth of experiential learning activities and research related to healthcare, ethics, and the humanities. Develop extracurricular opportunities that support the mission of the center including guest speakers, conferences, campus publications, retreats, discussion groups, mentorships, immersive global and intercultural experiences, etc. (40%)

Teach up to 6 credits per academic year with course assignments determined by the Dean in consultation with the Humanities Program Director. Participate in course design and management, including team teaching when appropriate. Collaborate with faculty to develop and teach selected courses or modules related to topics such as understanding the Catholic moral tradition in relation to healthcare, health equity, bioethics, or other topics related to the director’s particular area of expertise. (20%)

Marginal Duties:

Perform all other duties as may be required.

Education and Experience Required

Master’s degree in the humanities or related field with qualifications and expertise in health and healthcare, ethics, or related fields from an accredited institution required. PhD preferred.

Seven to ten years’ experience in higher education, including classroom teaching and a similar level of experience related to education, research, or practice in the healthcare field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the Catholic principles and values bearing on the study and practice of healthcare.

Ability to work successfully in an interdisciplinary and campus-wide collaborative setting.

Regular engagement with national and international healthcare initiatives.

Strong planning and organizational skills.

Demonstrated strength as an inclusive leader possessing empathy and caring for students and co-workers.

Dynamic, energetic, and entrepreneurial spirit and willingness to “try and fail rather than fail to try.”

Strong written skills and effective communicator (who leans more toward over communicating than under-communicating) and can get information across clearly to diverse stakeholders.
